1670 Stormy Grey Mixes

Has anyone else tried taking advantage of that dense gold glitter by mixing with other inks? In another thread, LeonW suggested mixing Stormy Grey with Ocean Blue. I had a bottle/sample of each, so figured I could step in and oblige.

I was too impatient to wait until I have time to do writing samples, so are some quick swabs :) What's your favourite? I like the 50%/50% the best.

Top to bottom:

Stormy Grey 100%

Stormy Grey 75%, Ocean Blue 25%

Stormy Grey 50%, Ocean Blue 50%

Stormy Grey 25%, Ocean Blue 75%

Ocean Blue 75%

I like the 50-50 one the most as well.

I like the 25-75 one! Reminds me of Iroshizuku Shin-kai!

Thanks very much for posting the lovely mixes.

This proves that Herbin should just simply add flakes to Bleu Ocean!

I think with some playing around, and maybe the addition of some black, this could produce a really nice "starry night" kind of ink. Maybe the 3:1 SG:OB one with Noodler's Black?

Next, I want to try using SG with Rouge Hematite to make a nice dark red with ridiculous amounts of gold glitter AND sheen. Adding Ocean Blue could make a really fun purple.

Ooooh I want to see the purple one you make! :)

Great photos and fun experiments with the inks! Thanks for sharing!

I like the 3:1 concoction, looks like a fancy Fuyu Syogun, one of my favourite inks! Thank you for the mixes, and I look forward to seeing that purple! :puddle:

TinySnail, let's put that set of squiggles in a window and see how it hold up. I can find a window for you if you want. :D

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

+1 on the 50-50 mix.

I was horribly disappointed by Bleu Ocean. So much so that I don't think I got through the sample vial. Mixing it with Stormy Grey might make me rethink that decision (and I love love love SG).

Hmmm. I also have one of the earlier batches of Rouge Hematite (with the big gold flakes). Wonder what I'd get if I mixed some of that with Bleu Ocean....

Thanks for posting the pics.

Thanks for the feedback, all! These are so much fun to do. What a versatile ink.

Good idea!! My new apartment (that I am moving into this weekend) has some nice windows, but you should expect some sparkly ghosts and/or squiggles coming your way.

I don't like straight-up blue inks much in general, so I feel you on that. Please do try those mixes, especially with that ultra-sheen RH batch.

Just a thought...the way the gold flakes settle out. Let a bottle settle, then gently suck out the grey into a different container ( hate to waste ink), then pour in blue or black to get the desired glitter in a different color.

Last night I tried this mix:

1 part Stormy Grey

1 part Rouge Hematite

1 part Iroshizuku Shin-kai

The result was a black/bordeaux similar to Black Swan in English Gardens, with glitter. Only problem is it spreads with a dip pen almost as badly as SG by itself.

Love the 50/50 also. Received samples of these recently, wasn't keen on either colour, but love your mix! That'll be tomorrow's blend ;)

I was inspired by tinysnail's experiment, and wondered if a more cyan ink might suit my tastes. This is the result. 6 ml of Diamine's Beau Blue and 2 ml of Stormy Gray. Although the scan doesn't show it, there are some gold flecks, but they are subtle and you might not notice if you didn't already know to look for them...

Might a bright pink ink give a violet hue? Any suggestions?

Love it. Love purples that have the sharp edge taken off. Oh ohh, think a new purchase is making it to the wish list.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
