Hello,

 

I'm sorry if this is posted maybe not in the correct section. If so, please move.

 

I noticed Black Friday is coming up. Do online pen merchants normally do sales for this occasion?

Are there any shops you remember from last year?

 

And then after Black Friday, traditionally, starts the Christmas shopping. Maybe you have plenty things on your list. As for, I don't really celebrate a lot of holidays these days.

Seriously? It's more than a month away! Halloween hasn't even happened yet...

 

I really don't get this whole Black Friday thing. I'll do most of my shopping online in my jammies, thank you, with the occasional jewelers' visit for the ladies (OK that won't be in my jammies).

 

Many online retailers don't do "sales" as such since they generally have lower prices than a B&M store, but some might. Not going to hold my breathe, it wouldn't be much anyway and what's the point anyway?

Yes, some merchants do have Black Friday sales, but they are usually very moderate. Fountain dealers are generally not in the situation as mass merchandisers who compete furiously to get your business.

Hello Mike.Jane,

 

I am pretty sure Levenger's will be running sales - they just did a great 25% off sale across their stores and site for Columbus Day. With additional reductions in price, I was able to pick up Obsidian True Writers for $29.95 each, (normally $59). :D

 

I'm not sure about the Goulets or anyone else, though. :huh:

The only 'black' day I can recall is 'Black Wednesday' when the UK got forced out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992, and the Bank of England base interest rate went up to 16%. At 14% our mortgages on two houses were already taking 65% of our post tax income and we were struggling to find anything else to cut back on, so it was a day that stuck in my mind as a real financial scare.

Black Friday is a day where some places have sales up to 70% off. Also every year somebody gets trampled over in the rush.

What is Black Friday?

 

Hello Richard.

 

It is an American custom. Thanksgiving is always the last Thursday in November; Black Friday is celebrated the following day. Almost every store has sales; it is designed to kick-start the Christmas shopping season.

 

It is called Black Friday, because here in the States, accountants traditionally used black ink in the store's ledgers when they were showing a profit and red ink when they were in the hole. Black Friday was the time of year when all businesses would hopefully get back into the black if they had been having sluggish sales/profit margins before. :)

In the U.S., Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, a holiday not shared with the rest of the world.

 

Black Friday refers to stores selling their merchandise at deeply discounted prices (however, it is fairly well-known that they jack the prices way up to give the appearance of steep discounts) in order to be "in the black" (positive income - as opposed to "in the red" or in debt).

 

I avoid Black Friday shopping. It can get ugly (from reports I've seen on the news), and... just in general, ew. Shopping isn't one of my hobbies, anyway, so it isn't hard to avoid.

I once read that Black Friday originally got its name from the dissatisfaction of employees who were required to work on the day after Thanksgiving. They were deprived of a long family weekend. Having worked retail in recent years, I'm inclined to agree.

I can't add to what is here about Black Friday, but look for National Pen Day specials from many of the more active online pen sellers and a few of the remaining b&m stores.

National Pen Day is November 7 this year.

Oh, now that's precious information. Thank you for it.

While generally I'm against having a World-everything day (or National-All-kinds-of-stuff-day), if it means good deals might come my way, well then I shall choose a fatalistic approach and embrace it.

 

Regarding Black Friday: The day is also used by retailers to push all the old models of products out the door, before the really new things come in, ready for the respective Christmas of that year.

As they say: "Beggars can't be choosers." (A proverb I love to use)

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
