Demonstrator Festival 2014

Having finally 'completed' my collection at present (until more are released!) I thought I'd take a moment to share my collection of clear demonstrators, along with a solution for pen storage I haven't seen before that I think works well.

The curation rules for my collection are:

- Must be colorless transparent, including a major part of the cap

- Must be monochrome (rhodium, sterling, stainless, aluminum, etc. furniture OK, gold etc. not)

- Must not be a collaboration with a non-pen company (e.g. Porsche, Momo, Lamborghini)

- Must have been available at retail

- No frankenpens/customs (e.g. Edison customs to which there would be no end)

Without further ado:

The storage is via a combination of the 5-drawer Muji acrylic box (absolutely the perfect size, and appropriate for clear demonstrators in particular) and Gary Lehrer's pen trays, cut to size.

Not quite full, but getting there. The last few pens are my non-demonstrator EDCs.

Is this a demonstration of demonstrators collection?

Congratulations!

To paraphrase Juvenal, 'quis demonstratores demonstrat?' or who shall demonstrate the demonstrators! (apologies for any errors of syntax... Latin lessons were a long while ago)

I particularly like the elegant and extremely appropriate storage solution for your fascinating collection.

Too many pens, too little time!

I love demonstrators - or so I thought. This is truly an amazing collection, and I have serious pen envy.

:eureka: :yikes: Not going to lie, I wish I had this collection.

I was going for a demonstrator collection but the money issue limits me very much so.

Thanks for all the kind words =)

Where is your demo 146mb

Not available at retail.

You are missing the Pilot 823.

The Pilot 823 Clear Demo has gold furniture, AFAIK - if you have seen one with rhodium furniture, can you point me to it?

I was taking another look at this treasure trove.... You don't have a Kaweco Ice Sport. (I'm not sure whether the chrome nib is standard or an option, but it would certainly fit your specs.)

By the way, what are you going to do now you've got all those demonstrators? Vintage demonstrators? Coloured demonstrators? Or are you joining the Black Pen Society? (the EDC collection certainly suggests that might be the case!)

Is there a clear Ice Sport? I know there's a clear Classic Sport, but as far as I'm aware, the Ice only comes in colors, and the Classic has a gold nib, finial, and lettering.

You know, it's funny - I *was* going to go into all-black pens, but a) there are too darn many of them, and B) a lot of them are kind of uninteresting to look at. Still, it's an idea. So far the collection has grown by relaxing my restrictions one at a time (for instance, I used to have a 'no writing on the barrel' rule that would have ruled out e.g. the Aurora Optima and most of the Stipulas). Maybe I'll start chasing some vintages, but many of them have gold furniture. Right now I appear to be missing what would be a 'grail' pen, an Atelier Simoni (of Omas fame) ID Demonstrator in Rhodium, but I'm not convinced one was ever actually produced before the company shut down. At least, i've never seen a non-promo shot of one.

Wow, fantastic collection! I like the demonstrators I have; the Serwex, Guru, Pilot 823, TWSBI Vac 700, Dilli, Waterman Kultur, Pilot Prera.....and I thought that was a lot!

The one I would really love, but will never afford is the Visconti Skeleton in black carbon.

You might be right on the Ice Sport, because despite this report on FPN the only clear one I can find at retail is a classic. Pity, it's such a characterful little pen (I collect the Sport Arts - very different from your understated collection!)

All black including the nib is becoming a definite little niche, with pens like the Monteverde Invincia Stealth, Parker Premier all black, Safari charcoal, Platinum Stealth. Maybe that's the way to go!

Too many pens, too little time!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
