It took me some time to finish this comparison but here it is. Not flawless, not pefect, but it has plenty of colors to see.

To be honest I've never been violet fan. I always liked dark purples but disliked most of violets. It's hanged with time. At the moment I'm quite keen on these hues.

I've included 60-63 inks here (the number differs on different papers, I didn't have enough samples of some inks, I've forgotten about one or two inks and haven't included them everywhere).

There are some odd-looking inks here that aren't violet/purple like KWZI Blue L51 (I just had a small sample so I included it here). Kung Te-Cheng, Potassium, Purpillusion are more blue than purple.

Alt-Bordeaux and Deepwater Obsession can be regarded as burgundy but as I'm not planning (yet) to compare burgunds / bordeaux I've included them here as well.

I need to thank Cyber6 here for A LOT of samples. You trully are Ink Smuggler Extraordinaire :)

SUMMARY

Well many of violets / purples have grown on me with time. There’s too many inks to create poll so I’ll list my TOP 10 in alphabetical order

Aubergine - De Atramentis

Deepwater Obsession (dzięki Kasiasemba za zamówienie grupowe De Atramentis)

Imperial Purple - Diamine

Nightshade - Noodler's

Poussiere de Lune - J. Herbin

Simplisties Violet - Akkerman

Storm - Caran d'Ache

Tyrian Purple - Diamine

Violet - L'Artisan Pastellier

Yama-Budo - Pilot Iroshizuku

I dislike some of the colors, for example Violette Pensee, Toucan’s Violet, Tsutsuji. SOme are boring – Purple Martin, Purple Heart but generally speaking family of violets and purples is rich in intriguing colors.

Let me know which are your favourites.

A fabulous resource and well done for putting such a lot of effort into it. Most impressive.

This post is as enjoyable as a trip to a favorite art museum...thank you for the effort and thought you put forth here. A nice way to ease into a lazy Sunday...

I have not tried more than say 5 of all of these. Recently I tried Diamine Tyrian Purple and that was that. I'm just crazy about it!

This is such awesome work. Thanks!

I wonder whether the mods would pin all of your comparisons at the top as it's such valuable resource.

Epic! :notworthy1:

I am guessing a dry-ish pen was used for the writing samples, perhaps a Safari?

I am no longer very active on FPN but feel free to message me. Or send me a postal letter!

Thank you for this fabulous resource! My favorite is Akkerman Simplisties Violet but I would like to try Sailor Shigure.

Besides Noodler's, what inks did you find to have the best water resistance?

Wow! This is such an extensive comparison and an incredible resource to have; thank you visvamitra! I haven't tried that many purples/violets, but, like Igsoltek I'm in love with Shigure and its beautiful sheen.

@carlos - after two days of soaking in water the oxford paper looks as below:

You can easily tell which inks like water :)

Thank you!

Excellent, awesome and time-taking as always. My fave is also DA's Aubergine. Next is Imperial Purple and Waterman's Violet.

Thanks again

I also liked how you lined them up to compare them side by side. These comparisons are very helpful. Thank you!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

WOW, I also wouldn't have thought of doing a two day water test. Interesting how it changed the results again. Thank you.

Well - it's one of these fun test that aren't really useful unless someone will manage to drown his/her notebook in the lake / sea and realise it after two days. Then if it's lake chances are he/she'll find the notebook. And if his/her future best-selling novel was written with Shigure, it's a win :)

It's more useful than you give yourself credit for... when a house floods, two days is short time.

Wow -- you've been BUSY!

Thanks for doing this. There are a bunch of inks that I like but also some that are new to me (and a few, like Poussiere de Lune, that i found to be not worth getting a full bottle of).

As for some of the ones you left off -- I've noticed that when diluted, Kung Te Cheng gets more purple (when fully saturated it's more of an indigo/blue violet color).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
