Vacuum-Fil Suprise!

Hooker56

Recommended Posts

I purchased this for about $30. Thinking I had perhaps overpaid a bit for a black Vacuum-Fil Jr.

When I got it cleaned up. Here's what I found:

Nice little demonstrator pen! B)

This is yet one more reason I love collecting these!

Very cool pens, but note that they are not demonstrators; this is the normal, retail configuration of this model.

Thanks Daniel,

I've collected some wasps and have another Vacuum-Fil lever filler, but I've never had an actual Vacuum-Fil vacuum filler.

I had also seen a previous FPB post by He-Who-Shall-Remain-Nameless showing a green marble Vacuum-Fil with the clear barrel, but didn't realize this was regular stock configuration.

The nib has been stubbed and it's a little drawer worn, but the nickel is solid. It will clean up nicely. I'll probably send it to Sherrell with another Vac-fill for restoration as I don't want to risk botching it.

Thanks again,

Clayton

Clayton,

After reading your post on Vacuum-Fil Wasps, I dug around in the Sheaffer box and I found these. I'm not a Sheaffer collector: I think these were in a large mixed lot I bought some while back.

I suspect they are like the one you mention (without mentioning!).

One is full-marble and the other has the "clear" ink-view barrel. These look like oversize models. I've also got basically the same pen, again an oversize, with a lever, in the so-called "screaming souls" pattern. It is near mint, with no plating wear and with the original, high-lustre finish (that is, unpolished).

Best,

Daniel

Those are nice pens, Daniel.

Clayton, wanna do a vacuum filler for me? I have one that looks dark on the barrel, but It apparently had red ink in it at one point (based on the nib cleaning). It does have the marble pattern on the barrel like the top, but also clear parts. :D

So, what's your point?

(Mine is a flexible F.)

Daniel,

Sorry, I just saw your post from several days ago. Those are great! I got a perfect 'Screaming Souls' body and then found another lever marbled chewed up pen that had a great CI nib on a perfect section. I used the section for the Purgatory pen. It came out great.

I have two other Vacuum-Fil vacuum fillers ... I'm trying to decide if I want to risk restoring them or sending them to Sherrell Tyree.

Kat,

I meant to call you, but have run into several time crunches of late. As I told you, I'd love to clean up and restore anything for you...but I reserve the right to stop on Sheaffer vac-fils as they can get dicey fast. In my experience they go fairly easy OR they start hard and run to trouble.

If you have time on Monday let's talk. :)

Kirchh,

Am I wrong to assume that the Vacuum-Fil sub brand is identical to the Sheaffer Vac-fil with the packing unit having felt and a washer? Probably different barrel diameters? Can I restore like a Vac-fil by hand drilling the old packing out and epxying a new washer and plastic spacer in ther...then replacing the vacuum washer?

Same overall idea when it comes to the currently-used restoration approach, though I'm not exactly sure what you mean about epoxying in a washer and spacer. There are some differences in the specific construction, depending on the age/model; nut shape, feed, piston knob, etc.

The early Vacuum-fils came with a number of transparent mid-sections

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
