I apologize for throwing some rain on the DA parade, but... I ordered the "CMYK" mixing set, and this is what I got:

Document Fuchsia is a bit off from true Magenta (towards Cyan), but not enough to be unusable; Document Yellow is spot-on true Yellow, but considerably less saturated than the other inks in the set; Document Black is a perfectly usable Black. But the Document Turquoise I received isn't close enough to true Cyan (it's towards the violet side of the spectrum) to mix true Greens. I emailed Dr. Jansen last week to find out if I could've possibly received a mislabeled bottle of Document Blue, or if there are extreme variations between batches of ink, but haven't received a reply from him.

I had really high hopes for these; so I'm rather disappointed at present.

Thank you for the comparison.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Yeah, there's definitely some QC issues going on with these...the Yellow is so watery it takes an absurd amount to balance the other colors, and the greens are very muted. :(

(Edited to add writing samples; Esterbrook Penesco dip nib on Borden & Riley Bleedproof Paris paper. The Violet mix is well-behaved but the Green and Orange--mixed with the watery Yellow--are both blobby).

These threads are always just so very, very gorgeous. You make me wish I knew, well, anything, about home-mixing. <3

Thanks, Peter, I'm familiar with Jane's mixes--there's some posted upthread--which is how I knew there was something wrong with the inks I received. My ratios are completely off from hers; it's almost as if we have two different sets of inks.

Thank you, also, for talking to Dr. Jansen about this.

(Edited to add: his Adular Blue is a true Cyan; if he had a Document version, it would be perfect).

I thought there was an Australian supplier of the permanent CMYK set, and for the life of me tonight, I can't remember who it was or where I saw the link or if I googled it. I just looked through this thread again, but didn't catch it if it is there (been a long day).

So, is there an Aussie supplier of the CMYK permanent set, and do they also have the clear dilutant please? Thank you kindly.

Hello,

I was wondering whether there was any update to Linda’s findings on the turquoise. My recent sample from Goulet appears to match her c70 m60 swab. The dry time and water resistance of the mixes that I’ve been able to test are perfect. Just wondering if the older true cyan is available anywhere.

Thanks,

Bloo

Anyone know about this ? I am excited about this idea, but I keep reading mixed reviews about these inks and then recipes are changing etc.. Is all of this worked out yet ?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
