Amazing!

Hmmmm...wonder if my Sailors or Carenes with the fatter nibs would like this ink....

Yes.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

PS: Does anyone have a good (read reliable) way to scan in images? The scan above is good, but not great. I'm thinking of scanning in the page alongside a grey-card or something and color adjusting from there? What do other people do?

This Inky TOD might help.

Another user just posted a surprisingly interesting video of ink flow from a fountain pen. Their first sample was Tsuki-yo; you can almost see the sheen forming. I can definitely tell where it comes from now. (For sheen, though, check out their video with Rogue Hematite!)

Yes, I just watched videos of ink drying. And linked them here for you to watch too.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm a little late - October being over - but I have this CRV that's been waiting patiently the whole time for me to post it. I have a couple other bits of scanning to post, too.

First, the CRV:

http://www.rdwarf.com/users/wwonko/images/fpn/iro/01-Tsuki-yo-Amber-CRV-1.jpg

http://www.rdwarf.com/users/wwonko/images/fpn/iro/01-Tsuki-yo-Amber-CRV-2.jpg

Those should all be links to the GREAT BIG HUGE VERSIONS if you want to look for sheen or feathering.

Fun with Lamy 2000's!

IIRC, four. Two got cross-mailed, I replied to one because it needed a little attention, and then one came in after those were done, so I did it, too.

Lots of nice individual posts, though, which has been a lot of fun.

I have a little more scanning to do and will have a few more samples to upload, hopefully this week. Need to get all the Tsuki-yo out of the pens and deep into Yu-yake. Quick before another blue starts... :)

Allrighty.... I finally caught up with myself, various annoying medical things et al getting in the way.

Prepare thyselves for an image heavy post, and my apologies on all of your internet connections, but in my opinion the more detailed the pictures the better. Now I don't have a scanner, but I do have a reasonable camera so further apologies for the uneven lighting and other bits in shot. Oh yeah, and my handwriting, it's better than it was, honest! All of the images below are 800px on the long edge and link to the full size versions, roughly 3500px x 5000px, for more detailed investigations if so desired - they're worth taking a peek at :) I'll up the thumbnail resolution for the following months to 1024px, this was a quick and dirty 800px output as I realised after posting that just putting full versions in the post was causing memory issues in browsers.

I felt that it would be nice to also have shots of the ink bottles, pens used, inks on nibs and as many writing samples as I could make and dig up. Let me know if this is too much and I'll dial it back a notch for future months :)

A couple of important notes on the image below.

1) The Vanishing Point sample might be a tiny bit watered down as I refilled via syringe and I think there was a little emergency watered down mix left in the cartridge.

2) The Omas 360 is very wet (yay!) but I think I'd maybe let it dry out a little this month so it might be darker than expected.

So... Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo. It was the first Iroshizuku ink I bought and I've been in love with it ever since. The colour, the flow, just great. Are there any downsides? For me there's only one I've found and that is that I get bleed through in some of my very wet nibs. But, and this is important, those nibs I'm talking about might as well be paintbrushes the amount of ink they lay down. Having said that it is the specific combination of the flow of this ink in those very wet nibs that dumps loads down and causes the bleedthrough.

EDIT: I'll update this post at a later date with the normal ink review questions on typical characteristics, and I'll make sure the next ones include them.

While you're waiting for the next review Tsuki-Yo is the shortened version of Tsukiyomo, the Japanese God of the Moon and ruler of the night…so next time you look up, you may see him :)

The Three Great Gods

Purifying himself after escaping the underworld, Izanagi stripped, and each piece of clothing became a god. Lastly he washed his face in a stream, and from his left eye came Amaterasu-Oomikami, goddess of the Sun and ruler of heaven; from his right eye came Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, god of the Moon and ruler of night; and from his nose came Susanoo-no-Mikoto, god of storms and ruler of the seas.
The volatile Susanoo didn't like his siblings or his job and grew ever more jealous, until one day Amaterasu tricked him into losing a bet. In retaliation he skinned a pony and threw it at her while she was sewing, killing another goddess. So Amaterasu ran away and hid in a cave, plunging the world into darkness. No one could get her to come out, until Ame-no-Uzume, goddess of merriment, hatched a cunning plan. She hung a mirror and a necklace (the Yata no Kagami and the Yasakani no Magatama, respectively) on a tree outside the cave and danced around naked making lots of noise to get attention. When Amaterasu poked her head outside to see what the commotion was about, she was enchanted by her own reflection, allowing another god pulled her out of the cave and block the entrance. Thus, sunlight was restored, and all thanks to a striptease.
The slightly-less-volatile Tsukuyomi, meanwhile, got bored of perpetual darkness and decided to move in with Amaterasu (and in some versions marry her). Things were going well until he went to a banquet in his sister's honour, which was hosted by Uke Mochi, the goddess of food, who provided the feast by vomiting and/or defecating onto the table. Tsukuyomi was sickened and offended by this so he killed her. Amaterasu was so upset by this that she vowed never to look at Tsukuyomi again, running away whenever she saw him, which is why day and night are separate. Clearly poor Amaterasu had to put up with a lot of abuse from her brothers.

Hogwash. The two names are unrelated other than sharing the word "moon" (月). If there is any relationship, then you have it backwards and 月読 (tsukiyomi) could be partly derived from 月夜 (tsukiyo), which is an older compound, but that is mostly unfounded conjecture based on similarity of sound.

I can only pass on what was told to me by our then Japanese GM who was such an amazing man that you just like to hear stories about the culture. I would be curious about what you might not like about the Ajisai story, which I posted in another thread and shared his video on Facebook. The stories were the highlight of my six trips there and I still have books of images and contact sheets in storage. Myself and friends indeed miss him.

I have not read your post on Ajisai, but it's clear the story of Tsukiyo being a shortened form of Tsukiyomi was either by someone semi-literate in Japanese, or badly misunderstood. I would not doubt either, as the linguistic, cultural, and historical knowledge of many "GM"s of various disciplines is laughable. It's on the level of obviously false folk etymology like, "golf is a traditional acronym for 'gentlemen only, ladies forbidden'".

Let's keep it cheerful.

Speaking of Golf - the last time I went to course, I was not allowed to be in the club that was men only. Really? They should have banned me based on my inability to play golf not my gender.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
