Battle Of The Customs - Hakase Vs Romillo Vs Nakaya

Thank you for the wonderful insights (I really like it how you put your words; if my English were only that good!)

Even if I love admire the nib and like the shapes I'm hesitating to buy from Romillo because I don't trust those ebonite pens - I'm always afraid that after 15/20 years discoloration has started and the colors fade. Don't you worry about that?

Not 15-20 years worried, no.

I've had pens that have warped in an extremely short period of time (a Koi Platinum celluloid being the worst offender - it all shrank to the point where the cap ring fell off and the cap no longer screws into the threads). In most cases, if a pen discoloured after 5 years I'd be upset; if it did so after 10 I'd consider it wear and tear, and if it survived 20 of constant use, I'd hold no grudges.

I also own several vintage ebonite pens (coming up to nearly 100 years of age), and they're still going strong...

So if I were a betting man, I'd be happy with those odds...

Too many pens; too little writing.

This has certainly crossed my mind...I ordered my Romillo because of the nib but I figure that if I have the pen for 15 or 20 years those fades will be part of its character and a badge of honor.

At the end of the day my Essential is really all nib and if the body gives up at some point I am sure I can find a suitable donor.

If I bought a fancy MB limited edition with an intricate body that was made out of some material prone to degradation I would definitely be worried.

Thank you for answering to my concerns.

I had those thoughts, too - with Romillo it's more interesting to get the nib and not so much the body (makes me wonder if he might sell just the nib and feed,...).

Still, I really try to keep my pen pouch neat and clean. Even the vintage pens aren't blemished despite being used a lot. Maybe he's expanding his celluloid range... or maybe I should change my way of looking at pens :-)

Greetings,

Michael

stunning pen collection  :notworthy1: thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

i really like your hakase rosewood. i've been wanting a wooden hakase for the longest time.

You know you want to :P

I just ordered another Hakase - a simple Burl Wood pen due in August...

Apparently it'll look like this:

Looks wonderful. Do you have pictures/sketches with the pen unposted, i am curious to know the barrel shape. Is that a gold trim ring on the section? It is such a pleasure to see the simple Hakase shapes, simple yet so wonderful.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Thanks Hari. This is the only photo I have - sent by Ryo-san. I assume that the barrel shape is the same as my buffalo horn pen, as they share the same dimensions (though this does without the roll-stopper, and adds a gold ring on the section - as the section on my desk pen). Note that my pen will sport the standard nib as I am no fan of the 'anniversary' dual-tone...

From what I understand, yes. One of the reasons I ordered it: I thought it would make a nice contrast to my Rosewood which is very much of the wood's natural texture...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
