Mabie Todd

Hey folks,

I have a small dilemma. I've had this Mabie Todd Blackbird BB2-60 for a couple of months now but I just cannot get on with it at all. The nib is a medium and, looking closely at it, I wouldn't be surprised if it had been sprung some time in the past and reset. I love the BCHR and it is in very good condition in that respect. It's just that damned nib. I actually find using a Zebra G dip pen easier to use than this Blackbird nib.

Has anyone else struggled with the Mabie Todd nibs. I am on the verge of giving up - which is a real shame as I like the pen overall - and selling it off for half the price I paid (or even giving it away if I cannot get that).

In frustration.

I am watching this thread with interest. I recently purchased a Mabie Todd No. 1 dip pen with nib and I'm not sure what I think of it yet. It seems a tiny bit scratch, but because it is used, it is probably 'broken in' by the original owner's handwriting. Going to keep an open mind.

What makes you think the nib has been sprung and brought back?

So, what's your point?

(Mine is a flexible F.)

I have a Blackbird with a F #2 nib and love it. While it flexes easily it is very controllable. What problem are you having?

I have been watching Mabie Todds for quite some time as I thoroughly enjoy the look of them. But I have been cautious for this same reason. Its a big investment for something that may not work for me. I am sorry you are going through this. I have "lucked" into several pens with various flex to them and am training my hand with those in hopes that eventually a Blackbird will make it into my hands, but your situation has me even more wary. If the investment was large enough maybe having a professional look at it before you part ways with it would be in order. Regardless, best of luck to you.

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.

Was that the end of the Laboratory? Somehow the exactitude created a fully destructive device, as always!
