Give up the day job and play with pens.

I won this bad boy on the 'bay last night. Description said it was copper but it looks more like root beer to me. Coming with a 9556 nib. I already have one 9556 and I like it pretty well. What do you all think?

  • 2 weeks later...

I just wanted to show off some of my girlfriend's Christmas presents. We finally got around to taking some pictures today.

The first picture is of a Ribbed Transitional with a palladium nib (8550) and palladium clip, band, & lever. (I never heard of palladium used on anything but Twist Fillers until I looked it up on Richard Binder's site. He has a green one in his collection.) The metal fittings were pretty black so I tried to clean them up a bit. I think I may have over did it.

The second picture is of a Bandless desk pen in an Deco style holder. My girlfriend and I resacked and polished both the Transtional and desk pen. The holder (DB-113) is an Esterbrook even though its not marked. There is a picture of it in the Esterbrook catalog in Paul Hoban's book. I don't know if the Bandless desk pen is of the same period as the holder.

The last picture is of a 24 pen display case. A previous owner must have messed up the nib chart when he/she tried to clean it. It's now the home of my girlfriend's dollar and transitional pen collection. The nib drawer was missing when we found the display case, so I made one for it with some 1/4" thick wood we got from Lowe's over the holidays.

Noble, you have our permission to keep the girlfriend. We like the pens too, but girlfriends who help restore pens are golden!

I would love to find a display case like that someday for my Esty's! I've seen several but they are always outside my budget.

And that's a nice red pen and nib Prighello!

Thanks, the pen was in amazing shape. Just a light polish to get a reflective finish. The pictures don't do it justice. It had a medium nib on it but I swapped it for a NOS 9314B stub (pictured) and replaced the sac which as still in good condition. Best deal on a pen I'm gotten so far :)

Veltri - Thanks for the compliment.

prighello - Sure is a feeling of accomplishment when you resac a pen and make it look as good as new! Very nice red transitional!

The old store display cases make nice home displays for special pens. Keep looking, you could luck out and get one for a bargain price.

Wow. Beautiful pens in this topic. Here are two of my Esterbrook dollar pens and one of only two bandless models I have.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
