Hello From Calgary

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I've been haunting the forums for the last few months, ever since I suddenly stumbled into the world of fountain pens. I've been reading tons here and it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to actually start chatting with everyone instead of just reading over your collective shoulders.

So, a little about me. I'm currently living in Calgary, Alberta, I prefer tea to coffee, i have way too many blue inks.

I've been exploring fountain pens and loving it! My current favourite ink is J. Herbin Lie de The, however I am currently too excited about all my pens to have decided on a favourite yet. Lol

I am looking forward to bumping shoulders with all of you in the forums.

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

Hi and welcome to FPN

Lie du The is a very nice ink with beautiful shading, good choice.

You have not yet made up your mind about your fav pen. But could you indicate which pens we are looking at?

Enjoy the forum

Thanks everyone. :)

RMN- my current pens are:

Jinhao X750, 2 Pilot Metropolitans, TWSBI 580 diamond, Pilot VP in Desert Orange, Noodlers Konrad acrylic flex, Franklin-Christoph model 66, Parker 51, Parker 61

The 2 Parker's are kind of frustrating me though. I found them both upside down in a pen cup in a little antique store on Vancouver island. The filling system on the 61 drove me mad, and the 51 had ink in it so old that it was almost fossilized. I cleaned it out as best I could, but it is still giving me hard starts, also, I don't dare take it apart because it's a really rare pen.

But other then that, my favourites vary between the FC 66, the Pilot VP and the TWSBI.

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

Welcome !

You don't have to choose a favorite. It will choose you.

So, which blue inks do you have ? The ink sub-forum can assist in choosing inks, so you will have just

the ones you like best. There is no way you will like ALL the inks. :lticaptd:

Dried ink is the enemy. Likely, both your old Parkers are in need of professional service.

Write with joy.

My blue inks are as follows:

A bottle of Iroshizuku Kon-Peki

Sailor Jentle Sky High

Waterman serenity blue (Florida)

And samples of Diamine Florida blue

J. Herbin bleu nuit

Diamine royal blue

Diamine presidential blue

De atramentis Atlantic blue

Diamine Sargasso Sea

J. Herbin éclat de saphir

So, lots! My favourite is the Kon-Peki with the Sailor Jentle sky high as a close second because I love the way it smells.

I agree that I need to get my Parker's professionally serviced but I don't really know who to turn to in that department.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
