Matte Black Fountain Pens

Well, the classic one would be Lamy 2000, it is in my opinion the best-designed fountain pen out there. I may be biased though, it is the first fountain pen that I knew I *had* to have.

Another one that made me go "aaaaaaah, I have to have it" is Sailor Professional Gear Imperial Black. It is a stunning pen and I really love mine.

Montblanc 220 is a vintage pen that borrows a lot from Lamy 2000. I don't have that one yet but it is truly a spectacular looking pen.

Not really fits the "matte" description but Porsche Design Tech-Flex in black is another one.

I have a Levenger L-Tech Stealth that should qualify. The end caps and clip are shiny black enamel, but the pen body and grip section are matte black.

Yours is much nicer than these, but I too, love matte black. Carbon fiber, too

Lamy has several in matte black: Safari, CP1, 2000, Dialog3, perhaps more.

But they are not stealth in being all black including nib and trim.

You can get a black nib for the Safair/cp1, so the only thing that is not black is the clip.

I have a black cp1 and it does look cool with the black nib.

The Pininfarina by Visconti is mostly matte black. I think it would look great with black trim but I don't think they offer it.

Levenger L-Tech Stealths are on sale or closeout for $49. Not bad.

Another option is the Rotring 600 or Newton. Usually over $100 on eBay but solid pens.

Parker 25's come in matte black. I like 25's but the black ones seem to be a bit pricey on eBay.

In general I like matte black, but they will show wear to the finish after a while (at least the metal ones). Some people think that's cool, others not so much.

One test is worth a thousand expert opinions.

Here are some of my matte black pens. These pens are out of production except as noted below, but most are readily available on eBay and other used pen market places. The Monteverde Invincia is the only one of these that has a black nib, it is a glossy black.

Just came on this thread. How about the Pilot Metropolitan? I have the one with the 'crocodile' print band near the nib section; other than that and the chrome clip it is a matte black. Can't beat the price and it writes like a pen priced at 10x the amount!

The Monteverde Invincia Nighthawk was an amazing Matte Black and Matte Carbon Fiber pen, while it was available.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
