Can Visumaster Pens Be Resacked?

Can, or maybe my question ought to be, should Visumaster pens be resacked and used, or are they too fragile to mess with, similar to Twist Fillers?

Thanks very much.

Yes they can.

When I got mine, I didn't know then what I know now nor did I have the experience with Esties that I have now. Yes, the ink view window and the thought of cracking it scared the hell outta of me.

I sent mine to Farmboy at Spa Estie West, I'd trust him with Any pen I have. Including that one.

I would be willing to bet Mr. Hoban has resacked the Visus he has.

They CAN be resacced, but if they should, or more to the point, if yours should, is up to you.

The VM section pulls away from the barrel just like any other Esty section. The joint is behind the clear view window. And although the section's clear, it appears to be as strong as a black one. The plastic in the barrel is also strong enough to handle the action (as opposed to a cracked ice dollar pen, which requires EXTREME care when removing the section). Just use care as you would with any other section pull. Maybe a bit more care, since it's a VM and you don't want to crack it by being too rough. I've resacced all my VMs without any problems, other than the usual difficulty removing the section.

Using the pen, again, is another personal choice issue. I don't use mine. But I'd say if you're careful to flush it out now and then, and not let the ink dry out in the view window, it'll otherwise work as well as any other Esty. With the VM as with any other pen, the business end is at the point, and any stress on the pen during use will occur in the section.

Best Regards
Paul

I resacced mine with no issues. I went a little slower than normal just in case, but it wasn't a big deal. I have only used mine once just to see if it worked.

  • 6 years later...

I would *love* one of these and realized that I had these same questions about res-saccing and using them. So great to find the info here, waiting for me. Now to find the pen...

I had a bunch a few years back, and sold all but two.  Yes, they can be resacced, and yes, I use them.  The resac process is no different than any other pen...use patience and moderation.

Well it does hurt more when the barrel cracks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
