Dollars And Scents

One of my favorite line of inks is the Iroshizuku not just for its writing qualities but because it's absolutely scentless.

As much as I love the ink, I'm looking for a lower cost alternative. I tried Noodler's Black and it gave me a headache.

What are your favorite scentless brands of cheaper, well-performing ink?

Hard to say, as different folks tend to be irritated or even notice different smells. Have you tried PR or Diamine? I've found both of them to be fairly low on the scent scale.

I like the way ink smells. Sailor is the berries to me. Sorry you don't like fragrance.

I like the Paradise Pen ink.

It writes nicely and the black is deeper than other blacks, if you know what I mean.

Oh I certainly like fragrance, just those that don't give me headaches.

This is a slight hijack, but I don't think I've ever noticed this quote on your posts before. Graham Greene is a great author and one who I count as one of my influences. This was quite an interesting quote. I haven't used a typewriter since high school, but, substitute "word processor" and I agree. I will use a ballpoint or a pencil, but the fountain pen just feels more natural.

Great quote!

Diamine inks often share a very subtle, light scent that I'd classify as slightly sweet and slightly earthy; it reminds me of the first flowers of spring that rarely have an overt scent. I've never noticed a scent while writing.

All scents are okay like the 5 Herbins plus dozens of DeAs but I love phenol the most, thus heads up for Sailor!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
