A Few Ghosts....

The movie is Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Some very nice artwork there. If you have not seen Tim's movies yet, I recommend starting with the "Corpse Bride", preferably in HighDef. A must see.

I suppose I should at least know the name of where my sketch came from. I'll have to check out those movies. Maybe Amazon will have them on Prime.

This is one of the most fun threads here, imho ~ so much talent!

You all are inspiring me (but that won't make up for my lack of talent, lol) to give this a try! I'm off to buy watercolor cards and batman stamps!!!!

Great work, people!!

Anyone gutsy enough to try an Anatole Krasnyanski? :P

Love the artists you've all chosen to 'represent' and the movies, too!

So, what's your point?

Guts is not the problem - talent is. I've sketched one out. Have to see if I can make it presentable before I ruin his work. Then again, if Macy Gray can get a record deal . . . :P

I need to start using erasable ink. Dropped the brush while painting the ghost face.

Napalm, you have started a craze! I love it. Thank you!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Go for it - all of mine are done on mixed media paper which sucks up water like you wouldn't believe. I went out and bought watercolor paper today and used it for the first time ever, though.

... mixed media paper which sucks up water like you wouldn't believe.

Been there, done that, never again. If you're drawing on it with pencil/marker etc and then use watercolor just for a small accent here and there, it's OK, but if your main tool is the brush, it's terrible. Go for 140lbs "cold press" watercolor paper, any brand you want, and it will be vastly better.

The biggest problem is that is wicks too quickly so it's impossible to get any color gradation unless you practically soak the paper with water. I had had enough so I went to Michael's to poke around. I had forgotten how cheap Michael's is - they always have 40-50% off coupons that you can have them scan from your phone. Cost me about $9 for 12 9x12 Canson sheets and 30 11x15 XL.I used to use the mixed media notebook for practice with acrylics, which worked pretty well as long as I painted some gesso on it.

I picked up a really cheap 90lb Canson student grade watercolor paper as well as a book of 140lb by XL, both of which are labelled cold press. The Canson is much better than media paper, but still warps quite a bit. Have not tried the XL yet.

That's really beautiful, Napalm! Is this watercolor? So precise!

Thanks Lou, it's watercolor on 4"x6" (postcard size) paper. I used a Sakura 01 light blue fineliner for the outlines and it probably contributes to the perceived sharpness.

I'm thinking of loading my Pilot 912 with PO nib with some permanent ink and using it instead of markers but I'm reluctant as I don't want to clog it with some "carbon" "nano" or otherwise clog prone stuff. Maybe I should get the way less expensive Platinum desk pen for such purposes. :eureka:

i don't know if this PIF is still running. I tried this with inks (this one) and another one with watercolor pencils which is still drying. i would definitely love to try some papers to do this on a small scale as cards for family. I am hooked! This being the first in some old samples from Blick, which i requested for same project in the future- is not perfect. I am hooked!

Unfortunately the following had already some written words while i tested the paper and i wrote over the washed out letters to cover them.

189 lb wt. (better)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
