Super Co-Razy View - Ink Unobtainium - Toucan Thistle

amberleadavis

Recommended Posts

So, this Co-Razy View will be super crazy because you have 7 reviewers all using the same paper and ink. You'll hear from me and 6 others about what we think.

Now, this ink is NOT for sale and it is not available. As Bruce says, this is unobtainable ink - or the inky element of Unobtainium.

What it is is an Amber super secret mix - so secret, Amber doesn't know for sure. The base inks are a couple of the Toucan blues and I've added Thistle ink powder, distilled water and a dash of phenol.

The point isn't the actual ink, but to see how each of us thinks about the ink. What does flow mean to each of us, what role does the pen/nib combo play in ink performance.

Attached are some of the initial sheets which I will mail out to the victims volunteers.

If you would like to participate in another co-razy view or a Super Co-Razy view, send me PM. Or start your own and send me a letter.

This is such a neat project. If I were in the USA I would love to participate, but as it is, my joining would slow things down to an unacceptable crawl, so I will just observe, jealously, from the sidelines. But one question you might answer for me: where can one get this Thistle powder? It looks like a really fun concept: ink powder and you just add water...

BTW that is a fantastic ink. I don't usually like this color much, but I'd be tempted to try...

The color is actually much prettier in person. It looks washed out because the paper is cream. I'm uploading a photo from my phone now.

To steal Bruce's name for this kind of ink, I've called it Ink Unobtainium.

I may have a slot open in addition to the one I offered to MHGuda. Anyone interested?

I responded by PM but apparently was too late... Too bad but hopefully next time. Had a bit of a family emergency so could not respond sooner...

I would love to do one of these with you someday! I think I'm getting more comfortable with the idea of doing ink reviews/thoughts. :)

Amber's results remind me of Parker Vector F with so called "Blue Black" Qink. A notoriously ultra-dry combo.

First, apologies for the bad photos - forgot to scan before sending off to Amber.

Second, update to the "Fussy" comment on the review... the minor nib creep turned into a clog after a day and a half of rest. Needed to clean the pen due to the dried clog on the nib. Cleaned up without problem, or remaining sediment. Nice color & shading, but it's now in my high maintenance category.

I just received my sample package today. Please don't blame me for the wrinkled paper. It was the mailman who stuffed it into my mailbox. I am going to ink up a pen tonight and take the ink for a short test run. I will let that sit overnight and then do my review tomorrow. A great way to end a busy day.

My Unobtainium package arrived today, and not a drop spilled. That's a cool pipette! How do you get the seal?

Anyway I have filled one eyedropper, with about half of the ink - my Guider Ebonite, with F nib from Fountainpen revolution. I was a bit disappointed at first, not to get the rich flow I saw in some of the scans. I've tuned the nib a little, and primed the feed, and it is better now, but still not what some of you got. Still, I have not yet tried it on Amber's paper; that I will try tonight or tomorrow morning. And the review tomorrow evening or so, so post probably sunday.

If it wont' flow, try it with a different pen. As for the seal - hot glue, baby.

I can totally see you holding a hot-glue gun like James Bond while saying that.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
