I'm looking for one that allows you to slip the back cover of the field notes into a slot/pocket in the leather cover, with a pocket(s) on the opposite side for business cards, receipts, etc. Made from 5oz to 8oz top/full grain leather. Something that will last at least 10 years...and look better as it ages.

This Urban Adventurer - ordinary notebook-style one seems to fit the bill and that's why I've one on order; due tomorrow or Tuesday. I'll post pictures and it would of course, take two notebooks.

Thanks very much

It duly arrived this morning and the quality was no less that I expected - excellent! Firstly a picture of it 'closed'.

Next, open showing one of the notebooks I plan to use in it (not supplied!)

The left-hand side flap isn't stitched at the top so it's ideal for receipts, tickets or those odd bits of paper that seem to accumulate in ones jacket or jeans pockets. As Fenner says though, it would of course take another similar notebook instead.

I've tried one of the 96 page Clairefontaine '1951-look' notebooks in it and it's fine but I wouldn't suggest anything much thicker. That's where the Explorer range of covers come in.

But that's another story!

^ Many thanks Good Captain for that review. Most helpful. That does indeed look like a quality product :)

I just bought a larger size midori style notebook from Awlandthread on Etsy. Very happy and Jason was willing to work with me to get me what I wanted. No affiliation except being a satisfied customer.

Who made it? Thanks.

Eric Savitsky. He doesn't have any sort of web page. You would have to message him on facebook.

There are a couple of good groups on facebook with lots of folk that can do amazing things with leather. I stay away from Chris Davis though. Couldn't get him answer an email and when I purchased one of his items I wasn't happy with it. This is currently what I am lusting after:

Who makes this one?

I like things more simple for pocket or bag. My FNs are with me always so have to fit in a Levis pocket even with a cover.

I've been very happy with the Midori like simple covers from davisleatherworks.

Have bought a couple different type leathers from https://www.etsy.com/shop/HuckleberryWoodchuck

One a leather "vest" that covers the spine and has a slot to stick a pen or pencil. The other more a leather envelope to slide the FN inside.

Along the leather envelope line is the "Stuff Sheath" from DDC. Very Orange, open on two sides. More expensive that the ones from davis or HuckleberryWoodchuck but a design that works well.

These all look really awesome. But like Sally, I need a thinner one. But I would like to have one that has a place for cards/money... I currently carry my fieldnotes in my back pocket and it really takes a beating...

I think it would be possible to make a cover from thin leather although by the time you add the inner sleeve and somewhere for cards it would be three times the thickness so 3 x 0.9 mm.

I am going to be working with some thin glove leather later today so I will give it a go and let you know if it works.

I have made Midori style covers for the field notes books before but I have not made this style so there is a little learning happening as I go,

The 0.9 mm leather was not thick enough to make the cover but the 1.3 mm is ok I will use 0.9 mm leather for the inside.

Here is the leather outer cover with some notebooks as they come in packs of three I think the cover should hold the three,

I was thinking of adding a piece of elastic in Midori style.

Thanks

Michael

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
