Another Estie Anomoly

Greetings O Estie Experts...I have here an older model dollar pen, black, with a single-hole clip (V-clip?) that I bought from Hobiwan on the Bay several years ago. I just recently started using it regularly, took a good look at the imprint and found it, well different. The word "Esterbrook" (in the usual script runs length wise down the barrel, but "Made in USA" runs around the barrel. What really struck me though, was the fact that it read just "Esterbrook", and not as one would expect on a pen of that vintage, " R.Esterbrook & Co." I have one other V-clip pen on which the imprint is normal, with the name, and "Made in USA" running lengthwise.

There's actually a third variant as well. I wrote an article in the Pennant for the PCA a couple years ago on all the imprints. I'll have to dig up the info.

Brian, any idea when you might post the article?

  • 7 years later...

I noticed that the one V-clip that I have has the "script" (with emphasized letters as if from a flex nib) which I did not know that existed. Anyway, does anyone has that article that Brian promised to dig for eleven years ago ? :) :)

PS. Note the shrinking at the top of the barrel, pressumably from the top of the J-bar.

What did I promise again?  Lol. Been working on a overhaul of Esterbrook.net but my daughter (who was assigned photographing and editing new pictures) has not been able to edit images. Looks like I have to outsource that. This is my favorite imprint variation, btw.

You were going to write an article for the Pennant showing the Esterbrook logos on a timeline.

I sort of looked at a part of this back when I pulled together what the signature on the back of the Esterbrook boxes looked like over time. You're welcome to use this should you need it, and if you ever write that article.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
