"The Twenty-Six Old Characters" 1947 W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company

I just came across this fabulous old bit of film from 1947.

Not sure if it has been mentioned on the forum before.

If it has, I'll delete this topic - if I figure out how.

Here's the easiest way to check something like that - do a site-specific search in google. Use the search phrase "twenty six old characters site:fountainpennetwork.com", which forces google to look only on the forum.

I don't think it hurts anyone (IMHO)...plus, it really is a very fun and interesting video, worth rewatching.

Maybe there should be a pinned topic called "Cool FP videos"... ;)

I think the problem is it would just end up as a catalog of SBREBrown videos.

My partner does calligraphy, and has actual handwriting, as opposed to my scribble.

We watched the video on TV over dinner - loved it!

It's a very nice video. Don't worry about it being a rerun. Reruns on telly can be fun, too.

And you can't remove a post, but you CAN change it for up to 24 hrs. So you still could remove all text and the video link from your post, but the post itself would stand. If you need to remove a post (or make changes after 24 hrs, warn a moderator by using the report button on your own post and typing your request. It may take a couple of hours, but one of the mods will get to it and make the post invisible, or change it, if needed.

Let it stay. For those who haven't seen it before, it's new and exciting. For those who have, well, they don't need to rewatch.

In order to study grip and hand motion, some time ago I excerpted all the scenes of hands writing from the film. Also deleted the sound. Maybe some will find it interesting:

One pen is a triumph valiant crest lever filler with silver frosted cap and a gold clip, another one was a valiant triumph, another valiant triumph vac fill fat model unicolor celluloid model used by the accountant, another triumph valiant used by a secretary, another valiant sentinel with a silver cap, another valiant triumph vac fill fat model unicolor celluloid model used by a woman, a triumph pen with a music nib used by a pianist, another valiant triumph vac fill fat model unicolor celluloid model used by a woman for writing in arabic, japanese and turkish

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
