This exceptional piece of work on the comprehensive Diamine Ink range by "cybaea" is worth a look.

I chose the Diamine Ochre and was unimpressed with it initially but I changed my opinion when I used it in a vintage flex pen.

The sepia tones fit the character of the old pen and match the colour of the faded BHR barrel.

I've used Private Reserve Chocolat for a few years now and really enjoy the way it writes and looks, particularly on buff color paper.

(post up above) What a great format for those ink cards!

Thank you. They're perfect for me, I hope they help others too . . . :)

My favourites are Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Guri, Waterman Havana (Absolute) Brown and J. Herbin Cacao du Bresil.

If you can still find them, get Caran d'Ache's Grand Canyon and Noodler's Galileo Manuscript Brown (an FPN-Exclusive job). In regard to the latter, as JefferyS once pointed out, heroin is more readily available in death row at San Quentin.

I'm enjoying the Monteverde Brown with ITF "Ink Treatment Formula". The scanned sample is a vintage Sheaffer's desk set with an open #3 nib, matched to Kokuyo Campus highgrade paper. The paper is very smooth and is not absorbent, and a little cream colored.

This is a new ink to me, so I hesitate to comment (yet) other than to say I'm really enjoying it. Happy Trails to you.

I'm not even a brown lover and I have to admit the GMB was cooler than I expected. I just recently tried a sample of CdA's Grand Canyon -- I'm struggling to get over the misnaming. That color is a brown least likely to be seen in the Grand Canyon. However, it's a great performing ink. If that color motivates you, then try Diamine Saddle Brown. It's another terrific performer.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'll buy that. As I once wrote here, my Grand Canyon looked not at all like the Grand Canyon where I was, yes, once. The real McCoy looked a lot redder/goldener/warmer. But as somebody else pointed out -- Sandy1 ? -- the canyon itself looks different every day, and depends on your own view of things. Still, one of my favourite browns.

Cult Pens/Diamine Deep Dark Brown. A classic and the only 'brown' ink I use.

I don't have any browns right now. Tried Noodler's Walnut - not for me, #41 Brown, liked better but not enough to buy a bottle. The only one I considered seriously? Monteverde Brown.

My two favorites.

mine as well!

Also give the new MB Leonardo a try, it is fantastic! It says that it is a red chalk, but I promise you it is more brown than red...

Another vote for Waterman Havana Brown (or Absolute Brown). Why did they change the name? Absolute Brown is so boring. Havana Brown had soul.

Noodler's Kiowa Pecan shades nicely. It has neither the fastest nor the slowest dry time. I like the color.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
