Hello, So I was interested in buying a nice brown ink or sepia ink. Any suggestions on which brands have great brown inks or any suggestions on brown inks with great shading?

I like reddish browns, so Noodler's Beaver and Diamine Rustic Brown are good. Noodler's \walnut is a nice dark brown.

Thanks! I did look into Noodler's "Golden Brown" and Diamine "Sepia". I looking for a light brown but not too light.

I also like brown inks & have tried a few & found one of the best behaved reddish browns is: Pilot Iroshizuku Tsukushi (Horsetail) - see ink reviews. Another lower cost staple brown ink to consider is Waterman Havana Brown (now sold under a new name).

Cheers,

Michael

I recently bought Diamine Chocolate Brown which is very good. I also have Waterman's Absolute Brown which used to be known as Havana Brown.

I recommend Platinum Pigment Sepia. Nice light brown... . . .

I have been doing a little research and I do love waterman's serenity blue. So I might end up buying the brown ink that they make. I just love how well behaved waterman ink is.

If you like inks that shade, MB Toffee, Herbin Lie de The` and Pelikan 4001 brown...a reddish brown.

I do recommend having two toned shading inks....they are not 'wishy-washy' as some who are still locked into supersaturated inks still say. They are lighter somewhat pastel, other wise you could not see two tones.

Shading inks give you that old fashioned fountain pen look.

There is a thread where a fine poster does 32 brown and sepia inks.

I only have two sepia inks...one from R&K is more a gray, the other MB Sepia is discontinued....get if if you can get lucky. Pay extra for it. I did for my second bottle...now have 1 1/2 bottles. :D

German vintage '50-70 semi-flex stubs and those in oblique give the real thing in On Demand line variation. Modern Oblique is a waste of money for a shadow of line variation. Being too lazy to Hunt for affordable vintage oblique pens, lets you 'hunt' for line variation instead of having it.

I posted this a while ago on a different thread. I still rate Cult Pens Deep Dark Brown as my favourite brown ink:

I've mentioned to a couple of other FPN members today that my long long search for something to replace the incredible Parker Mocha seems to have come to an end.

Cult Pens Deep Dark Brown arrived yesterday - it's gorgeous !

No red or pink in the wash - unlike Yama Guri, Brown Boron and MB Toffee Brown. Don't get me wrong all these produce a beautiful line colour but lose it when washed over.

The Deep Dark Brown is lovely and dark in line, earthy in tone and will shade.

One of my favourite pens to sketch with is now loaded with it and I'm looking forward to having a play.

Wait a minute. So what's Waterman Havana Brown sold as now?? I was gonna recommend that ink, too.

Also, Yard-O-Led Sepia, but I'm pretty sure it's no longer made, and I'd buy every bottle I could find if I could find any. It's great in my old Pelikan M&K 120.

My vote goes for Noodler's Golden Brown. Shades beautifully, does not feather, is a rare and beautiful shade of brown. Real eyecatching but you don't get tired of it. If you want to real deep brown Diamine Chocolate is excellent. You might want to head over to Goulet Pens' site and see the comparisons of browns in their Swab Shop. You will have much fun making up your mind, and if you are in to blue, too, they have a page of blues that are wonderful. You are sure to find what you want there.

Love the neutral deep dark brown! Any source for it in the former colonies on the other side of the Atlantic?

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.
