Does Anyone Know What Fa Stands For?

I bought a Lamy Studio and it says FA on the nib.

What I bought was an EF nib.

But I do not see any diffrence between the EF nib on the Safari I had and the FA nib.

Is it like the finer version A nib or does it have a diffrent meaning?

Fine-RightHanded (FL, Fine-LeftHanded). From what I can find anyways. Though not sure why need to specify Right handed since that's usually be default unless it's an oblique/italic of something.

Might have been a Fine Anfänger nib (Anfänger- German for starter).

But I've honestly never heard of that nib before. Would like to hear from the more experienced folks here.

Reasonable guess but you were wrong. Joke4Eva almost nailed it because it is indeed a Starter nib .........Anfänger nib (Anfänger- German for starter).

Lamy's "A" nib is what's on the ABC beginner fountain pens for kids. It's a round, forgiving ball-type tip much like Pelikan's old "K" (Kugel) nib. It writes a lot like their medium nibs, but it's a little more forgiving when it comes to the angle of the pen on the paper.

Learning something new everyday. And I thought bout the ABC pens, but it didn't quite *click* that it was from those. Makes a lot of sense though, especially when kids are still learning how to properly hold a pen and nib to paper.

The "A" nibs are available to fit all the pens that take the Z50 Safari-type nib.

On The Pen Company website (no affiliation) it is described as a "Children's nib" >>> http://www.thepencompany.com/product/lamy-z50-replacement-nib/1442/

Funny, all those comments aimed at the "A" in the OP's question, but not the "F". Are you guys seriously taking my word on this one, even though it was a guess?

I'd love to see a photograph of the nib.

FA isn't a current nib size that Lamy produce. Fine Anfanger would make most sense to me.

I was looking for the same thing and ran across this.

If the L is left handed, then A might be ambidextrous

Pelikanos used to come in R(ight), L(eft) and A(mbidexterous). Also, almost exclusively M nibs though I did stumble across a translucent yellow FA.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Interesting thread.  My guess would have been something like "Fine Accountant", but that would have been for an English or American pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
