Which Japanese Pen Is Your Favourite, And Why?

Hi Playtime, I see you here.

I like the one you sold- Danitrio Ban-Ei. It's a bit too medium for my taste so I'm thinking of grinding down to .25-.28mm.

I like Nakaya Portable Heki-tamenuri F nib. .28mm and it's more thinner than western EF and smoother and crispier.

Next future one, I'd like Dorsal Fin either V1 or V2 and Naka-ai.

I would love to have Dorsal Fin in Kuro-Tamenuri and Naka-Ai in Aka-Tamenuri.

Dorsal Fin remind me of Tando-short dagger.

I'm sure Mr. Masuyama can grind it down to what you want:)

That's a beauty!

Any other angled shots? I'm very tempted.

What nib is it?

Some more photos. Nakaya Dorsal Fin version 2 in aka-tamenuri with an italic B nib (0.55 mm)

I googled and found this beauty in Kuro-tamenuri along with Fin v1 in Aka-tamenuri.

It was in Spanish site, so I couldn't read but picture says it all.

I might just go for it.

At 3 price points -

Pilot Metro - Wow what a pen at impossible to beat price. Seriously, this pen compares to pens that cost 10 times more. Nice grip section and high performing nib… no hard starts or skips...

Pilot Decimo - I much prefer this over its first cousin the Pilot Vanishing Point… both the smaller diameter grip size and the more flexible nib appeal to me. (although the nibs are interchangeable my decimo has more flex.)

Nakaya Naka-ai with left oblique broad extra- flex nib (only surpasses the Nakaya Deskpen due to portability)

My most beautiful one, by far, is the Nakaya Cigar Heki-Tamenuri. Sadly, the nib (a medium flex) is not that great. Not too smooth, semi-flex at best.

My best writers: Pilot 823 Ambar, with a medium nib, which is the smoothest in my collection (and very juicy, as most Pilot nibs I've tried); and Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with WA nib (that thing writes like a dream).

Pilot Custom 845 Black Urushi fitted with FA nib. Balanced, weighty, smooth writer, nice to look at!

I have fallen for the Pilot Murex MYU 701 M-500BS Stainless Steel Black Stripe Fountain Pen (from about 1973). Pure design at it´s best.

There are also a few Nakayas I would love to own, but I´m afraid, I won´t be able to afford even one of those for the rest of my life.

Well, many would qualify... I love my Hakase Sandalwood pen, as well as my Nakaya's. These two pens below have been in use for quite a long time Ruud

I have as hard a time picking one Japanese pen as a favorite as picking one American or English or French or Italian or German pen as a favorite. For the last few months though I have been using my Eboya pens more than any other ones from Japan but before that it was Sailor KOPs.

But lately one of my Danitrio pens has been calling me.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
