Platinum Century #3776 Chartres Blue - F Nib

Pen2009

Recommended Posts

As I like my Bourgogne (EF nib), I decided to get the Chartres Blue with an F nib. I saw many pictures of this pen and I am pleased with the actual pen in my hand. Compared to the other #3776 resin body pens, the Chartres Blue (and Bourgogne) is nicely weighed and seems to be well made. I am holding this pen with the Platinum converter; so, the weight of the converter is also contributing to this weight.

I like the slip seal cap mechanism and the friction fit closing of the cap. Platinum's friction fit closing is different from the one with MB's Writer's edition. It is difficult to explain in words; but, all I can say is that works flawlessly.

I am not a big fan of gold trim, as I like the understated silver or platinum trim. Compared to my #3776 Celluloid Blue, the Chartres Blue shows more bling. But, not to the bling-o-meter scale up to the Pelikan styles, howerver.

The 14K nib is the gold trim and the stamping on the nib is the same as my Celluloid's rhodium coated 14K nib, except for the placement of the letter "F." My Celluloid is stamped with F in Japanese.

I checked the nib with my loupe and the tines are perfectly aligned. So, it should write very nicely, similar to my experience with my Celluloid's F.

I have also posted the family photo. One of my #3776 Sterling silver is missing from this photo as it is in my other place.

Beautiful pen and nice pics! I just ordered a 3776 century, but in black and with an extra-fine nib. Really couldn't decide on the blue or the black so I thought I'd just get the blue later :) It is a beautiful pen!

What a coincidence! I am still awaiting a delivery of my Black in Blak with ultra extra fine. Platinum is still working on my order as the ultra extra fine is produced per order.

I agree with you there. I am also not a big fan of gold trim. But speaking in a very neutral way, I would have thought that a silver or platinum trim would have given the Charles Blue more class while retaining the gold trim on the Bourgogne. And WOW - you have a massive collection there!

May I introduce my #3776 Century Chartles Blue L.E. "Basho" (Japanese banana plant) ? I bought it in March at the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi department store in Tokyo. A nice combination of blue color and silver trim/nib :-)

I love the "Basho" version you posted.

I have the Platinum Chartres Blue, too, which I bought second hand with a M point. After a few days with it, I realized the M point was not for me, so I sent it off to Pendleton Brown for a regrind into the Pendleton point, and now I love it even more.

What I would like to have is one of the celluloids, but that ain't happenin' anytime soon.

What a great collection! Beautiful!
I was on the fence of buying a Chartres Blue with an EF nib, but it was out of stock...
I think I won't escape to buy a Platinum pen next time!
The Ebonite #3776 really caught my attention, but that's a bit pricey.

I have the Chartres blue with medium point. A comment about the slip-seal feature. I've been very busy the past few months and neglected my fountain pens :yikes: ...yea I know...but it happens :) ...so after at least 3 months, I uncapped the Chartres and it wrote immediately. No skips. I was impressed!

I've had a 3776 Century soft fine for a while, and received a 3776 Bourgogne F from a daughter for my birthday, which is filled with Iroshizuku Momiji and very nice. So this week I got a 3776 Chartres F to keep it company, filled with Iroshizuku Asa-gao, also very nice.

The SF nib really needs a very light hand to get the most out of it; a light touch and you get a finer line than many Japanese EF nibs, and I can't do that consistently. If I don't manage to develop a consistent light touch, it may have to go to someone who does. But not just yet.

A light touch isn't getting the most out of it - it's getting the least! Give it a little nudge downwards occasionally and you get light but stylish flex, from a nib which will still allow you to right fast in between the flashy curlicues, and that's a bit special for this sort of money. 'Good top know someone else has discovered that nib though.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
