I have both and the Decimo is less in girth. There's a thread here that shows some photos of the differences:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/13108-review-pilot-capless-decimo/

I noticed that the Decimo can be found on Amazon for a similar price to the VP.

Just found another page that explains differences as well:

You can also sometimes get good deals on them from ebay (even new). The Decimo is usually slightly more expensive once you include shipping - especially since you can't get them from a US dealer.

Just my two cents but I prefer the Decimo and the nib seems more "responsive" out of the box… but they are both wonderful pens if the clip being near the grip doesn't bother you.

The size (girth) and weight of the pens are the biggest differences. I actually prefer the standard vanishing point over the Decimo, but that is my preference for what feels good in my hand. The Decimo is just a little too slender for me. I only have one Decimo, but I have several standard VPs because they fit me well.

The Decimo comes in fewer colors, though they are quite nice. I think they were originally intended to be the ladies' professional pen. This lady, however, has gone crazy over the standard VP.

As for justifying the extra $100, well, I can't. So, my only Decimo was purchased from an ebay seller who had it at the same price as a standard VP. The trade off was I had to wait a few more days for delivery. I don't believe the Decimo is a standard release in the USA, so the pen prices reflect that with the sellers who make the effort to bring them in.

I'm happy with the price after seeing how fabulous the VPs nibs were out of the box. I tried the standard VP but its just a shade too big and too heavy to be comfortable. I own two Decimos and am stalking my third so that I can have an XF, F, and CI nib (Binderized). I was debating making the leap to a Nakaya but that price point feels extravagant to me (when I need to buy a new front door, I should really save $$ for that).

The only downside IMO to the Decimos is that the color selection isn't nearly as wide as the VPs. I'd give an eyetooth for the metallic orange...sigh

A penny for the old guy.

Thank you for all the replies. They have been very helpful. I went to the Pen Boutique in Bethesda. MD today to check out the Vanising Point. Fit my hand very comfortably, so I purchased one in red with rhodium trim in fine. Wrote notes with it tonight at a presentation held by the Washington Calligrapher's Guild and it is just a pleasure to use. I see it being my main EDC pen.

Pen Boutique is a nice store.

It's a shame you can't get the decimo in a retail store in the USA, but I've ordered them from Japanese retailers through eBay and they cost the same as the vanishing point.

Congratulations on your new purchase. The red with rhodium trim is a nice combination.

It's really nice you had the Pen Boutique to be able to "test drive" the pen for yourself.

Hi,

Enjoy your new Pilot Capless! While I prefer the Capless Décimo colourwise and size wise (I have two pink ones and a violet one), they're both quite excellent, and choosing which one to buy is really more a matter or taste and what works for you.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
