I like red inks and I use them on every day basis. I'd like to present you short comparison of ten colors.

Of course it would be great to compare more reds but then my samples of Oxblood and Monaco Red are empty. Next time.

So the inks I've compared are (in alphabetical order):

BRILLIANT RED - Diamine

BRILLIANT RED - Pelikan

BURGUNDY RED - Montblanc

CIEMNY CZERWONY (Dark Red) - Nicpoń*

*Nicpoń is chemistry PhD Student that's active on Polish fountain pen network. He'c created limited line of nice, saturated inks in many colors.

GARNET RED - Graf von Faber-Castell

http://imageshack.com/a/img834/7862/c9n5.jpg

MATADOR - Diamine

http://imageshack.com/a/img834/6818/pmh4.jpg

MORINDA - Rohrer & Klingner

http://imageshack.com/a/img835/3799/pvp4.jpg

RED - Hero

http://imageshack.com/a/img842/9356/rew0.jpg

RED DRAGON - Diamine

http://imageshack.com/a/img842/1002/kwg3.jpg

RUBY - Diamine

http://imageshack.com/a/img836/6886/yi84.jpg

There was an accident. I was ready to make "splash painting" with Ruby. The sample was standing near the sink, I don't know why, but I've abruptly turned and my hand pushed the sample. The rest of the ink flow down the sink to some foreign lands. Ruby is a great color, so it's a pity I couldn't compare it this way.

SUMMARY

RED DRAGON stomps. It's amazing deep color. I love it. Second and third place are taken by CIEMNY CZERWONY and MORINDA / MATADOR ex-aequo. There are also colors I dislike, namely: Pelikan's BRILLIANT RED (it sucks: I can't find anything interesting about this ink), GARNET RED (moderate flow, dull), BURGUNDY RED (dull, not interesting).

What's your opinion? You can choose few inks from the poll.

Wow! That is a very impressive comparison of red inks! I kindv just like looking at them. I mean, without thinking that it's an ink comparison.

Thanks for doing this and sharing it!

Wow.. a very nice comparison. I prefer vivid colors and especially red.

Posts like these make me miss the "Thanks" button.

Where can we get the Nicpoń inks?

I like the "CC" entry, but also the Garnet and Burgundy, as much for their shading as their muted color. Interesting that all three are very similar in the "Paintings", but very different in the writing samples.

Interesting thread. My votes were for Diamine Red Dragon and Diamine Matador, as the ones that loverall ooked most like what I expect "red" to look like . At least on my screen.

Great comparison.

In splashes I liked another ink than in swabs and then in the written examples there is yet another favorite.

It depends very much on the use of the ink how well it looks.

I tried my best to look at all of them without paying attention to the names. I found myself drawn to Red Dragon and Matador most.

This is a fabulous comparison. Thank you.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Oustanding comparisons. I didn't vote because I don't like any of those (I have all of them except for one). Also your various presentations. Maybe Morinda, otherwise I'd pick D's Poppy or Wild Strawberry. Thanks again!

Thanks for the comparison test, Visvamitra :)

I also feel frustrated by Pelikan Brilliant Red 4001, it's even more orange than Hero 201 (and Ostrich 906) but its permanence, at least on the papers I have used, is a joke: under normal indoor light it fades into a ghostly orange within a week, rendering it unusable. I do not know how it behaves in your test though.

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

  • 3 weeks later...

I also like Sheaffer Skrip red.

It is a nice clean looking red.

For me my top 2 reds are

  • Sheaffer Skrip - Red
  • Diamaine - Red Dragon

Which one I chose to used depends on the difference in shade that I want at that time, lighter = Sheaffer, darker = Red Dragon.

I am still looking for a red-black that I like. I may have to mix my own.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
