Hello all! I received my Nakaya Neo-standard in Kuro-Tamenuri around 3 weeks back and I noticed that it wasn't as shiny as I had seen in the pictures. The shine isn't as prominent when compared to my other pens such as the Sailor 1911m, Pilot 92 (All black plastic). The Nakaya has a slightly dulled look - is this normal? Does it get shinier as time goes by? One thing I will say though is that I haven't seen any micro-scratches at all on the body - really quite impressive.

The Nakaya & the Pilot. Hopefully you can see the pen on the right is shinier.

Anyways, does anyone have any experience or advice about how would I go about polishing the urushi properly if that was at all possible? (I'm aiming for a mirror finish). Regular swiping with a cleaning cloth doesn't seem to help lessen the dull.

Thank you!

can't be polished at home. I suggest you contact the vendor. a high gloss is expected on their usual urushi pens unless you have paid a premium for their other finishes.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Check with Ron Zorn and ask about his pen polish specifically for pens. That would be the only thing I'd consider for this finish.

[EDIT] I asked Ron for you since I was asking about a couple things. He has not tried his polish of urushi. Sorry.

Oh wells thanks anyways! I've emailed Nakaya directly - I'll let everyone know what they advise!

  • 4 weeks later...

I went to a shop last week, where I also noticed that there were different versions of polishing. The difference was so huge that it can only be on purpose. The seller was also surprised by it and said that he would make sure to explicit a shiny or dull finish when ordering pens for customers. He was sure that otherwise customers might be quite disappointed.

So it would indeed be good to know from Nakaya what is going on.

I sent more detailed pictures to Nakaya (which really showed the difference in finishing between the section which has a mirror finish and the outside barrel/cap which is much dulller) and they said there was definitely something not quite right with the finish, and requested that I send it back. I'll update everyone when they do get it, but it may take a while!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
