Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Nice review! I've been using this mix with equal parts Waterman Purple and call it "Purplix". :)

Do you find any staining of ink windows with these R&K iron gall inks? On goulet pens website, they recommend not keeping these in a pen for > 1 week, because they may stain.

It may be my imagination but it seems that the salix and scabiosa combination shades more than either one by themselves. Have you had that impression?

I totally agree!

I now put a splash of Zhivago in my Salix Scabiosa mix to counter the purple bias. The mix is a keeper. I love it.

I keep them for as long as month and have noticed no staining on the Pelikan M200 or TWSBIs.

Very nice mix. Love the new blue-eyed ghost.

Thank you! I may switch 'em out.

I think so. I'll post up the Salix and Scabiosa scans.

I think that does once and for all show that the S&S mix has more shading than either one by themselves. Winner! I think it shades on the level of old Montblanc blue-black.

For anyone in France, you might consider the Callifolio ink. It doesn't have as much shading but it is a good price and the pouches make shipping easy.

I think I still prefer the Pelikan Blue Black which is still quite purple or the Akkerman #8 and #9 which aren't IG inks or as purple but shade nicely when in use and also clean up well.

What I'd say about all of these inks is that they are super well behaved. They weren't difficult to clean, they didn't clog, they are all reasonably water resistant and those that I've tested were reasonably fade resistant. Though nothing is as resistant as KTC.

It'd be a pleasure.

15 parts Salix

5 parts Scabiosa

1 part Zhivago - to remove the obvious purple tinge I (sorry) dislike in blue blacks.

This mix lives in my one and only Mont Blanc (a 342), shades beautifully and behaves equally so.

Another keeper mix.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
