Your First Nakaya

Thanks for the info and the offers to meet up chaps.

Much appreciated.

If you do not get the opportunity to see these, I can vouch that they are immaculate - I handled Paul's ones.

In fact, had I not known that these pens had been in the wild for some time, I would have said they were new.

I recently got my first Nakaya. A dark, glossy Briarwood, with a soft fine nib and extra flex.

I really love the pen and often find myself picking it up just to look at it, or nonsensically scribbling for no other reason than just to enjoy feeling it in my hand.

While not as flexible as I had expected, the nib does flex enough for my purposes if given enough pressure. I must confess I was disappointed at first, as the nib required quite some pressure to flex. However, as I got more and more used to the pen I realized it's quite a good compromise. I can write normally most of the time and still get some nice flair when I specifically want to.

If I had to name one thing I don't like about it, that would be the shiny plastic section, which in my opinion is no match for the elegance of the briar wood. But I can live with that.

Also, the ink has a tendency to flow back from the feed into the cartridge while the pen is stored nib up. The pen starts normally, but then dries out after a couple of letters. Shaking it a little is enough to bring everything back to normal though, and the problem never occurs again after that (until the pen is stored nib up again, that is). I guess I can live with that, too.

I just received the Nakaya I ordered back in December here May 7th. This is my first Nakaya. Since I wanted to put more money into a special pen for myself, I had some custom features added. I honestly thought about what I'd really like for a few months and can't imagine needing any more pens for quite a while after this one. I say that not only because of how much it cost but because I ordered something to my specifications with personalization. Funny, I am now unemployed and would never be able to afford this pen. I'm glad it took a while, I'm really appreciating this pen. Here are some pics and a very poor writing sample. A bit like a child playing with crayons. I'd love to comment more after I've played with this pen for a few weeks.

Kuro-Tamenuri Piccolo

Two-Tone Flexible Fine

Matte Gold Plated Clip

Zo-Gan white shell inlay

Maki-e Naming in gold

She has a little Pen pouch (Kimono).

I think it looks like a sleeping bag for my pen.

The colors and design are very cool.

(The fabric is very nice, I would buy extras for other pens if possible.)

They give you some COA authenticity paperwork. I feel special. I'll be scared if someone in China starts faking these, paperwork and all.

Love the custom extras :)

Congratulations, Brotzmann, on your beautiful first Nakaya. I love the kuro tamenuri, and the Piccolo is my favorite model. Enjoy your beautiful pen in good health.

P.S. What's wrong with Sailor Blue-Black? I've been using it (in a Montblanc 146, but now in a solid black Piccolo), and I really like it. That doesn't mean you have to like it, too, of course. (Smiley face implied.)

Thank you!

Actually, Sailor Blue black is my favorite ink. I guess I was just commenting on how expensive the Sailor Sei Boku is here in the US. I couldn't remember the name sei Boku so I call it the expensive stuff.

I ordered a Piccolo Long in Kuro-Tamnuri with Ruthenium nib and clip a while back. Should be here soon. I'll post some pictures then. :)

Dang! You really splashed out on your first Nakaya. May you long write with it in good health and on good paper!

Re Sailor blue black – never tried it, though it was a color I used to prefer. Currently I use on occasion:

-- Pelikan BB, current formula

-- Montblack BB, old forumla

-- Lamy BB, old formula

The Pelikan and Montblanc are both *very* nice. I'll have to check out Sailor's offering for a little comparison.

Thanks. I didn't really plan to splurge on it neither did i splurge on it. :)

Initially i ordered a single tone fine nib, the simplest combination. The dealer said he didn't have it in fine nib but Extra fine would be available. I agreed. The dealer said that he had it, but after i made the payment, he checked the stock and said the nib was slightly damaged and he said he will send me some other pen with the same attributes.

He offered me this one after checking his stock at no extra cost (said he'll bear the additional cost). So i got this. Initially i wanted the Neo Standard but they have almost the same dimensions. :)

What's the benefit of a ruthenium coated nib over a gold nib? It's not like gold corrodes or anything.

Looks, mostly. It all depends on whether you like the silver color or the gold color.

Oh, i guess i will opt for the gold nib next time as well. I don't see point in spending extra which doesn't add anything which i like to the pen. Unless of course something like this happens again. :P

Anyway, the dealer was sent me the picture of the item before shipping. Have a look. :)

I have seen a very few other nibs with the NAKAYA imprint. Are they changing over to this, or are they just trying to see if people are awake?

I just checked; all my nibs say, "NAKATA". I haven't bought a Nakaya in several years, though.

Yes, they are going from "NAKATA" to "NAKAYA". So the pens with "NAKAYA" imprinted on the nibs are the newly manufactured ones.

I doubt everyone will think this is a benefit, but I noticed that the ruthenium-plated nib is just a smidgen firmer than the yellow-gold firm nib, which is why I prefer the ruthetnium-plated nib (in addition to preferring black or red with silver; I opted for gold nibs for the heki and shiro pens).

Hi Brotzmann, I'm coming in late here but beautiful pen, as others have said. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting a photo showing the entire pen with the kanji displayed? I like the closeup of the kanji but was wondering how they look with the whole pen. Thanks!

My first and only Nakaya is a Piccolo Cigar in black that acts as a little sis to my Danitrio Mae West.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
