Your First Nakaya

Well if truth be told, my first Nakaya experience wasn't a good one. I ordered the Joan M. model with a music nib. It wrote beautifully but after a half a page it dried up necessitating my taking the barrel off, and either taking the cart off and putting it back on or squeezing down more ink. I took it to the next pen show and let their nib meister work on it but I think the thought it was just a dry writer so didn't really help. So i corresponded with richard binder and he said he thought he knew the problem and could fix it. He did and he did and now it writes beautifully.

I am not gun shy at all with Nakaya. I visited their home in Tokyo and have bought 3 more pens of theirs...

Here's one of my favorites

Every one since has written beautifully right out of the box and has become a treasure in my collection.

My first Nakaya (order in june 2005, delivery in august 2005) was a long cigar pen, in kuro tamenuri finish. I think this is still one of the best pens in my collection. The lacquer finish is impeccable. The photo shows three, the one in the back is the oldest one. Ruud

My first Nakaya is...

Portable Cigar in Heki-Tamenuri F nib. Love it!

My second one is previously loved one. Portible Cigar in Aka-Tamenuri.

For the third, I'd love to have Kuro-Tamenuri.

I just ordered my first Nakaya -- a light briar, matte finish, with the standard gold nib (fine), clip and ring. I really like the way they look together in the pictures I've found -- though it seems to me like the dark briar is much more popular.

I've been looking at their website since they opened the English side, and I guess I finally got tired of saying "well, maybe later..." It's still a bit nervewracking -- hope I answered the survey questions correctly. Their policy on adjusting the nib, my biggest worry, is quite generous. What I'm looking for is a pen I can use all the time, so the nib has to be just right.

I'm sure I'll post pictures when I get it.

Beautiful Nakayas! Especially these Dorsal Fins V2 are amazing. One day I might get one of these. For now, a Naka-ai in unpolished shu is a more realistic goal. Might be I'll order one in November. <3

If I remember correctly my first Nakaya was from Stylo Plume in France when they still sold them. It was a Piccolo in yellow tame-nuri. It came with a soft fine nib and actually was quite the disappointment. It's now my only Nakaya Frankenpen sporting a Platinum music nib - much, much better!

I also ordered the Platinum Izumo that day which is an amazingly beautiful Urushi pen and, so I believe, widely underrated.

They didn't even tell me it had shipped so it was a very pleasant surprise this morning when an EMS package arrived. I couldn't be happier with this pen; it feels wonderful in the hand and it writes with a gorgeous thin fine line. I've felt nervous about the order off and on for the past five weeks; not any more...

I have this pen but got the furniture in the white finish. I agree that it is a beautiful pen.

I bit the bullet and ordered a Piccolo Midori Tamenuri with ebonite urushi. The nib is the "flex" in medium. Got it about two weeks ago and I have used it every day, and don't see that changing. My other pens just seem to fade into the background. I love the softness of the nib, and even as a lefty overwriter find it a joy to write with. The bright green against the black is just wonderful, and I can't wait for the green to become even more obvious - how cool to have a pen that changes over time. I have - I mean HAVE - to save up for a decapod next, and the tamenuri is absolutely my favorite finish. Ah, the joy of a new obsession!

The first Nakaya i ordered was a Portable Writer in Aka-Tamenuri, directly from Nakaya in November. It was shipped on Christmas day and is still in transit.

However, the first Nakaya to land at my doorstep was a Portable Writer Decapod in Kuro Tamenuri (below) already in stock at Iguanasell. Took a week to ship (excellent service - no affiliation.

Also expecting a Black Portable Writer as well.

I hope i can control myself in future

My first was a Portable Cigar Kuro-temenuri with medium nib. I paid for it with one of my rare art sales. I have never been so much in love with a pen. If I had to give up the rest of my (modest) pen collection this is the one I would keep. My second purchase which I await with great anticipation is a Dorsal Fin 2 Kuro-tamenuri with music nib. This effectively takes me out of the pen market for the coming year.

Love all, trust a few, do harm to none. Shakespeare

My first was a Naka-ai in an Aka tamenuri finish. I have since purchased 3 more Nakaya's:

Here is my Nakaya Desk Pen Stand in the Aka tamenuri finish. The stand is absolutely gorgeous, the image does not do it justice.

I really like this picture, which helps me clearly see the difference among Naka-ai, Long, and Neo Standard. Would you happen to have a similar photo of the pens with caps off that would show the relative length of the sections?

Your desk pen in Aka Tamenuri makes me drool! What a color and finish!

Note that the nib on the Piccolo says Nakaya, not Nakata.

Hi,

As per your request:

Perfect! Thanks.

So I can clearly see that the Neo Standard has a longer section and shorter thread length (though apparently coarser threads) than the Naka-ai. I am thinking this might make the Neo Standard a little more comfortable than the Naka-ai is in my hand.

Naka-ai is my only Nakaya, but with the LA show coming up next month, I'm thinking of my next!

Thanks for the superb pictures! I just can't seem to stop drooling!

Beautiful pens.

Also thank you for putting them together for size comparison.

Can I assume that the section on the Neo is slightly slimmer/thinner than that on the Naka-Ai?

I have both and measured them. It is just an illusion... they are the same just the the Neo is longer.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
