My Impression Of Tokyo Pen Shops

I did not end up getting any pens as the only thing I was looking for was a Sailor Hieroglyph pen (or possibly its Pilot cousin, but really the Sailor was my target) but did not find one.

I picked up 9 bottles of ink (OK 10 really but Visconti Blue does not count!)

Here they are:

Nice haul!

How did you get them on the plane?

Are you talking about the Sailor Pharaohs? I think I saw one earlier today here in Seoul, if you're inclined to make the short hop.

On the Hunt For:

1) Atelier Simoni ID Demonstrator Natural Rhodium (As if it existed.)

2) Moresi 2nd Limited Edition Delta Demonstrator

3) y.y. Pen Club #4 and #10

That's what I want to ask too - will sellers in Japan be able to ship ink overseas? After coming back from Tokyo I regretted I didn't buy more. Now I want to have Sailor Ultra Black and Blue Nano ink, perhaps a few bottles of Bungbox. The small Itoya shop at Haneda doesn't have many choices so I couldn't do last minute shopping.

The price of a bottle of Ultra Black (Kiwakuro) on Rakuten is around 1500 yen (about US$15) but here in Hong Kong it's more than US$30 and the main problem is, I don't see many stockists carrying Japanese ink.

If you're willing to use Tenso.com or equivalent, you can get anything shipped to you for a fee; the fees can be steep if you only have small shipments though.

The Sailor inks, are those new inks or just new packaging?

I carried on as many as I could (has to fit in the quart sized ziplock bag...I got 4 in there. The rest I taped the lids (after snugging them down) and put them in a gallon sized ziplock bag and put them all in my checked luggage and prayed! :) They all made it intact!

I would consider it if I was still in Japan... These are the pens I was looking for: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/239683-sailor-egyptian-hieroglyphs-pen/

The Sailor inks are reissues of past limited release inks that were very popular. They are back by popular demand and supposedly part of the permanent line now. Probably available in the US in June or July per another thread here on FPN.

At least two of my Iroshizuku bottles were shipped to me (in California) from Japanese sellers.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
