Repair To A Bard

Paul Hurst

Recommended Posts

Hi

An idiot (me) lent his pen to another idiot last night, who managed to drop it from some height onto the floor. There is now a 25mm long curved crack in the cap - any suggestions for a good repairer (or even if this is possible). Thanks.

Send it back to CS in Plymouth. They'll be able to repair or replace....

Bad luck Paul, I'd be quite distraught. If CS can't help and all else fails, you could try... jewellers loupe (eye glass), super glue, a really sharp craft knife, P1500 wet and dry paper and Brasso metal polish.

Try to spring the crack open just fraction and apply a tiny amount of superglue from the edge of the craft knife (remember superglue runs and if you get it into the cap threads you may be unable to screw it on again), leave for twenty four hours and then very carefully using an eye glass, scrape off any excess you can see with the knife. Then really, really gently sand the crack and finish by polishing with the metal polish. I've never done this to a CS pen but I've repaired a few others including an Osmiroid 65 mkll that was so badly cracked that the clip fell off. I can see where I repaired it but I seriously doubt anyone else would ever notice.

ps Brasso has been reformulated in the last year or so, smells utterly foul now and I've not used the new stuff on resin pens, so proceed with caution there, Maas metal polish may be a safer bet.

May I suggest you contact Kayleigh at our factory: kayleighcare@conwaystewart.co.uk

I do not know the colour of your Bard, but we might still have caps from when we were producing the model and if so, there is a possibility we can make a replacement cap.

I wish you good luck!

Kind regards,

Reassuring words from Ms. Burke for one like me, whose CS collection is expanding rapidly...(--initial pistachio Wellington, I-M kick-started a spree of seven more CS pens in as many weeks!)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
