Montblanc 149 Nib Tipping

My mum's just found a 149 lying around in one of her drawers. It looks like it has never been inked, and is in overall mint condition.

 

Except, I've noticed that the nib tipping on the underside seems almost nonexistent. Compared to other nibs, this seems very strange. Is this normal, or could it possibly be a damage to the nib?

It's strangely dry and writes very lightly, but. I'll flush it then try again because I've only dipped it so far.

It looks normal to me. Just checked the two 149 I carry and the look about the same.

I've flushed it and it still seems unreasonably dry. I'm not sure whether it's my handwriting or another factor, since I'm a left handed person. I'm an overwriter/hooker, if that's helpful.

In my opinion, the bottom part of the tipping material is missing. My F and EF nibs are like the 2nd picture above.

I think the pen has worn tipping, so it must have been used at some point

I have no idea. I suspect it's from my grandmother who died a few years ago. My parents saw these pens being left behind and so kept them. But to be honest, it definitely does not look like something my grandmother would have used. I am getting it looked at at a MontBlanc shop today.

It's the style of the tipping, most of my Meisterstucks have this upturned look to them.

 

Re the dry writing - Flush, flush, flush. If a pen hasn't been used for years, it only takes a few flakes of dried-up ink to block the feed channels. If that doesn't work, maybe try one of the proprietary cleaners, too.

 

And congratulations on getting a 149. Pen for life.

Turns out that it was the feed that was broken. Strange, since I dipped the pen but it still scratched. At least it writes well now.

Glad you found your fix. For others who might have nib problems, I'd like to add that I just had Greg Minuskin retip my MB Chopin and he did a beautiful job, writes better than new, and back to me within 2 weeks of mailing it out.
