Parker Permanent Brown (Uk) Written Review

I'm not a fan of brown colours, but I entered the other day in an old stationary store and saw some old Parker ink bottles getting dust.

You can see a Sapphire bottles besides the Brown colour.

Only major brands are available in my country: Parker, Waterman, Lamy, Rohrer & Klingner and Faber Castell. Fountain pens are also in the same brand offer, so if you use a FP you are "out of this world".

The price per bottle was an interesting bet for testing, almost $5, the bottles have been sitting for a long time in the shelves, the store owner could not give me an estimate how many years were "getting older", after opened some bottles most of them were half full, the content must be evaporated through the years.

This is my first ink review, tried to make an scan but this colour is very difficult to reproduce the exact hue, most of the written samples were snapshots from camera photo.

The test was made using a Lamy Safari with different nibs: EF,F,M.
Paper used: 80 grms. Photocopy paper (Atlas) , a commond peruvian brand.
Ink used: Permanent Brown (UK)

Photo size: 800x600 (if you like bigger size i could consider posting some of them).

Enjoy!

Conclusion:

Not a bad bargain :) I returned to the store for second time and purchased another bottle to complete the contents of the first one.

I'm using this ink more frequently and in my opinion, this ink have some special characteristic, as a result of the special hue, it can be similar to black colour, but this ink is unique, it has some redish hue that is not visible in the photos, tried to simulate the colour using photoshop, but the paper turns red.

Interesting colour! I have a friend who travels to Peru from time to time, could you tell me the name of the store and it's address? I'm thinking if it looks more red as you say it might just complement the browns I use, Yama Guri and Lie de Thé...

Good review! Thank you for posting it. I learned some things. On another post, I read that a person added sterilized water to a new, old stock bottle of ink that was about half full there by replacing the water that had evaporated. Might turn those two half bottle of ink you now have into two full bottles of ink. However, I must stress that I have never done this my self and do not have any idea about whether or not it alters the qualities of the ink.

Thank you for your good review.

I have a couple of bottles of vintage Quink Brown (style of bottles from the 1940s). The 4 oz. bottle I happened onto in an antiques mall in north central PA a couple of summers ago. Wasn't even sure what color it was at first because the label was missing, and the swabs were dark red looking. But it's definitely Brown.

Liked it so much I then went of Ebay about a year ago to see if I could get more, and found another vintage (practically full) 2 oz. bottle of the Quink Brown for sale, so I'd have it if and when the 4 oz. bottle went bad or (more likely) that I'd use it all up!

Nice review -- I wouldn't have thought of checking how an ink behaves when you hit it withe a highlighter....

I think you could re-hydrate those inks to fill the bottle with out problems. I do that with ancient 1990 Pelikan ink cartridges. I"m sure some one with more experience with old dried/drying out ink bottles could help more.

But why is it alled permanent... It does not seem to stand the water test very well

Aloha - Your question about "Permanent" vs "Washable" Parker inks

The "Permanent" was Parker's way of distinguishing it from their new "Washable" inks. Ink stains on clothing was always a hassle, and Parker's answer was a water based "Washable" ink, "for school and home use" meaning that soap and water would remove or mitigate clothing stains. By contrast, the "Permanent..for records and documents" implied Use At Your Own Risk. It was not intended to represent a "bulletproof" quality on a sheet of paper, but did indicate that it was not formulated to be easily removed from one's clothing or anything else accidentally stained.

This is gleaned from ads that Parker ran touting their fabulous new and unique "Washable" inks directed at the School Children/Home market. School kids' clothing usually resembled a map of Indonesia. By implication, every other brand was "permanent" and would permanently stain. Of course, Parker's "permanent" claimed to be better suited for records and documents.

My box of war-years Quink offered this color selection, coinciding with intended market segments:

  • 4 Permanent colors: Black, Blue-Black, Royal Blue, Red
  • 5 Washable colors: Green, Violet, Brown, Blue, Black

I use both, and absolutely love 'em all.

Aloha - Your question "What is solv-x?"

Parker's box says it dissolves gum and sediment, checks corrosion and rubber rot, dries on paper 31 per cent quicker than average inks; does not dry in the pen". A number of posts elsewhere in FPN generally support the claim that it does not damage pens and sometimes improves a sluggish flow.

My favourite ink ever. Closely followed by the Montblanc Racing Green. Unfortunately both discontinued. But I still have 16 bottles left at home (and some boxes of cartridges, using one by one with the others slowly evaporating. When I start a new bottle I fill the rest with tap water and it does ok.

Can anyone tell me what the Solv-x is for?

When I was at school in the 60's Quink Ink was sold in all paper shops and Solv-X was a marketing plug for self cleaning ink. My favourite colour in those days was the royal blue....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
