Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Amber and I are of a mind that these Callifolio inks are both too watery and too similar in color to merit separate labeling. Based on the color swatches on L'artisan Pastellier's websiteI ordered four of their inks, spread across the purplish-blue to blue-black to blue-grey spectrum--in that order (1) Baïkal, (2) Bosphore, (3) Bonne Espérance, and (4) Gris de Payne. In particular, the Baïkal held promise as a rich purple/blue hybrid, but I found that the Baïkal and Bosphore shared rather too much inky DNA, as did Bonne Espérance and Gris de Payne:

The inks are surely not expensive: the 40ml triangular bottles are €3.34, and the 50ml pouches (which Amber has proved actually contain 60ml) are €5.02. Much like ordering Akkerman inks directly from the Netherlands, costs of shipping are such that there was no difference if I purchased just 4 bottles or if I also added 3 pouches. In the end I paid 27.00 to have €28.42 of ink sent to me. (One bonus was the extraordinarily cool Roy Lichtenstein global shipping box used by the French postal service--I will post a photo of that separately.)

In the end, I was expecting more differentiation of colors, but didn't really find it. All four inks are equally thin: as I mentioned to Amber, they are about as saturated as the brush-cleaning water in a glass after you've been painting with your watercolor set as a child.... I have just one of them loaded into a Lamy AL-Star right now, and I also agree with Amber that it seems an unusually dry ink--so an odd combination of wateriness and aridity.

My apologies: those images I just uploaded could profit from better lighting--I will try to get better comparative shots and supplement my post.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
