My Gama Padpad Aka Raja

Is it as simple as just sanding a shiney ebonite pen to make it look satin? ...or is there more to it?

In principle, yes, you create a coarse scratch pattern on a polished pen for the matte finish. How well it turns out, is a matter of skill and experience of the artisan.

For that matter, making a pen is as simple as just shaping the raw Ebonite rod. :)

The Padpad Mk-II aka Badsha:

The Badsha is nearly the same size as the Padpad but realises a longer ergonomic section for comfortable grip but still manages to accommodate the 23.5mm long large Schmidt nib unit retaining the same cap size. Very close tolerances.

Some grainy handheld pictures:

^ that is fantastic.

Did order your with the Schmidt nib and converter, or is that your own add on after delivery?

The Schmidt unit on the ASAPens site looks smaller than the unit in your pen. Did you purchase and install yours separately? If so, do you expect ASAPens will offer the larger unit as an option?

Scribbles, are you asking about the Ergo by any chance? If so, technically, the Badsha is a different pen from the Ergo, which I have separately documented here: ERGO, Internals are different, the nib units themselves have different section fitment dimensions and hence will not swap and there is no space for the bigger nib unit in the Ergo.

I hope this answers some of your questions, regarding ASA's future plans, I think you must get in touch with them directly.

No problem, they are cosmetically very similar, so easy to mistake. thanks for the positive comments about Badsha.

I had a spare Schmidt FH341 nib unit lying around waiting for its turn, had some time on my hands after coming home from work, so tried fitting it to a Badsha body, here is the result, I had the steel version only, i know it clashes with the gold trim of Badsha:

Ever consider a DIY urushi type paint job?

I'm really tempted to buy another Hawk and doing a little custom paint. Maybe not real urushi poison tree lacquer, but some type of lacquer -- layered, sanded, and lacquered again for the Nykayaya look.

Further to my experiments with the Badsha, I made the following today, a section to accept both the Schmidt FH452 and the M800 nib unit, a first for me.

I received some feedback back channel that a smaller sized nib would look good on the Badsha. I thought a FH341 would be a good small sized choice, here is the result of that:

now your just tempting me... but I'm not sure about my credit card the Ergo looks like the one... but since checking out ASApens I didnt see it looks like its your own personal commission? I was thinking Raja, Kuyil which are big... probably a bit too big for me would it be an insult if I'm going to get a clipless version?

I think this pen (I have one here) looks better with the larger nib. I do not think the FH341 in it would work for me.

Yes, the Badsha etc is my commission. I think clipless etc it is upto your personal preference. There is no one correct answer to your question.

The smaller nib looks good, but when I see the larger nib I like it a lot more. I really enjoy big, giant nibs.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
