Pens With Music Nib

Hello

Hope this is the right place for my questions and hope also that you can help me with a doubt that I have.

I am interested in a pen with music nib. specifically on Platinum or Pilot. Which one do you recommend me?

Other question that I have is about Pilot 74 and Pilot 742. Both are nice but besides the size or the pen and nib, do you know if there is a big difference between them? Do you know if it is possible to interchange the nibs? Do you know if there is a place where I can buy only the nibs for this Pilot series, 74 or 742?

Hope you can help me.

Thanks in advance

Ricardo G.

I don't know about Pilot 74 and 742, but everyone seems to agree that Platinum makes the best music nib today. My Nakaya with a music nib is a great writer.

Depending on what type of music nib you want (springy/flexy or rigid), you have a couple of options. Both Platinum and Pilot offer music nibs, but they tend to be of the rigid variety. If you buy from Nibs.com, John can add flex for you giving you more spring. He's done this on a Nakaya music of mine and it's just what I needed to make the pen a keeper.

In the alternative, you may be able to have John fit a vintage music nib in a modern pen. He put a Welty music nib in my Custom 92 (I wanted a piston filler) and the combination works incredibly well.

Comparison has been done before, see this link

Platinum offers the best line variation out of box

Custom 74 uses size 5 nibs and 742 use size 10 nibs. The nib and feed are friction fit and can be removed and changed, but I know of no retailers that sell just the nibs.

did he also tune the pen itself? most pilots are dry so the music nib might need more ink than what the pen can supply. was it expensive?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
