Pelikan M205 Toledo Red

This is going to be a short and sweet review of this somewhat diffcult describe pen.

I like Red. I prefer bright Red.

So this pen was a no brainer.

The pen itself has classic looks which will never go out of fashion. It is available in other shades like Black, White and Taupe(?). But I knew I wanted Red.

It is a difficult shade of Red to qualify. I had to pump up the vividness of the images to get close to the brightness. But still it is just an approximation of the actual shade.

I got this pen originally with a broad nib which turned out to be a mistake. It is a wet writer. And strokes were too thick. So it was just lying there while I was busy with life. Then on EBay I found "Mr Missing-Pen" selling the fine nib. His English leaves something to be desired :) but he makes up for that by putting a packet of Gummy Bears in the parcel.

The pen is rather small. Which was kind of a surprise. But then it fits in the hands very well. The fine nib is really very very smooth but with just a hint of deep growl. If that is the right word for it. Because I am not going to use the words Toothy or Scratchy. That will be blasphemy.

Though the traditional shades like Black are timeless, but I will suggest go for this Red if you are buying it.

I concur, and I would compare the friction it creates on the paper to the feeling of writing with a felt tip.

Nice photos, and glad you got gummy bears!

One of my favorite colored Pelikans. Really an eye catcher.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

I have the Taupe - it's elegant & understated and looks awesome paired with Shin-Kai or Visconti Blue. I also made the mistake of buying it with a B nib and need to get the Medium.

Just be sure of the M nib. It writes really wet and I found the Fine to be of my Taste.

Thanks, I do like wet nibs. I have a M800 with a medium nib and it's perfect, so I'm hoping the M on the 205 will be ok. I have to buy it online & untried so....

In the end I took your advice and bought a Fine nib. But just to be safe, I bought the M400 version because it's gold and hence likely to be a little more forgiving. Being Left-Handed I really struggle if the nib is fine or dry. The nib arrived 2 days ago and I am thrilled with it. It's not too fine for me and quite wet. It also looks great in my Taupe M205 as the nib has only a tiny bit of yellow gold. Thanks for your input. Happy writing.

Great photos, looks like a really nice pen. Could be my next pen, really like small pens. :D

Nice review! Rolf is great to deal with, and I've bought a few nibs from him. I'm fortunate enough to live about an hour north of him so regular German post works out to be next day delivery!

Do put some pics of the Taupe colored M205. Want to see how it looks in real world.

Now a days my rule is that if the pen is European, then go for Fine. If from Japan then go for Medium.

In hunt now for a reasonably priced fine nib for Waterman Expert.

The Taupe special edition M205 definitely grows on you after a while but the Toledo Red is still my favorite...

Red is my favorite color but I am undecided about Toledo Red. I hope I get the chance to see one at a local pen show next month. I have Taupe, which I love, a Blue demonstrator, ditto, and just acquired an M215 - Black Rings. –I'm definitely not a black pen person, but I'm liking it so far. Oddly, it has a medium nib that I really can't distinguish from the fine nibs on the other two––interns of the line it lays down.

Both of your comments are interesting. I knew the Pelikan steel nib wrote differently than gold ones but I couldn't exactly describe what that difference was and both of you have captured this difference very well.

I bought a 1.1 mm italic Lamy nib this week I love it. That experience made me realize that I consider my Pelikan steel nibs to write ever so slightly stubbish. And I like it much more than my Pelikan gold nibs–hands down.

For the Medium nib, rather than the thickness, it was the volume of ink it was gushing out which made me switch to fine nib.

I just picked up a Taupe M205 with a broad nib from Pen Chalet's Memorial Day sale (about $87 with free shipping using the code MEMORIAL).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
