Importing Pens Into The Uk From The Us - Any Experiences

For what it's worth, HMRC also advised me that they don't give 2 hoots what price someone pays for an ebay item. All they want is an estimated value of the item. That can be the original estimated value (useful for old items) or the sellers cost price, or even the manufacturers cost price. They know that ebay items sometimes go for more than an item is worth. They are human and don't intend to rip off joe public

A question: if tracking says 'CUSTOMS CLEARANCE', does that mean America's customs or England's? This is from the US to the UK.

I've got a nice pen coming that's going to incur some nasty charges, but even with customs at about 20% it's still going to be an incredibly small price to pay (by comparison)!

Thanks,

Joe

Exactly. Under British tax law it is the importer, ie you the customer, who is legally reponsible for the accuracy of the customs declaration. If it is deliberately misstated the importer is the criminal here in Britain. The exporter, ie the seller, is presumed to have completed the declaration on the buyer's instruction as his/her agent.

In practice exporting countries' authorities do not much care and the exporter's risk is actually virtually nil. This is because with the end of export tariffs there is no loss to the exporting country if the value is misstated and therefore it would be a financial cost to enforce.

I was advised by HMRC that the problem and trouble never lies with the sender but with the recipient who asked for a lower value to be shown

UK customs. But if you've got the tracking data, you should be able to trace its progress, and that it's landed on this side of the water.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

I've been stung a number of times - as everyone else says, they get you on the import duty and then the post office charges you as well.

Wouldn't it be great if Nakaya used TWSBI piston fillers instead of Platinum cartridge converters?

So 'Cleared Customs' means it's in England? Cool, shouldn't be long now then, thanks :)

Yes, but if you haven't had any other tracking info for a couple of days, I'm afraid they've probably got you for charges .... Enjoy your pen when it arrives though!

Haha, that's certainly not what I'd call 'getting stung' :D I just paid about £100 for a nakaya. However, I didn't have to pay for the Nakaya itself, just the customs, and I was only too happy to do so for such a lovely gift :) Usually, I resent customs. In this case, I gladly paid them :)

Looking forward to Wednesday :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
