Hi.

Swell was a french fountain pen maker that existed from 1925 to 1930.

I was known to produce very good quality fountain pens.

there is very little information about this manufacturer and their pens are quite rare to find.

Here is a safety pen.

2 inscriptions on the body:

The Swell pen

Modéle Safety

Nib - Warranted, 18 CT, IST Quality

Length - 12 cm (4.72 inches) when closed / when open with the nib out - 12.5 cm (4.92 inches)

Certainly inspired by a Waterman 42.

The writing is very smooth and agreable

What a BEAUTIFUL pen! It's just fantastic!. I love the colors and the clip is amazing. And is that a hand-carved pen rest you've made? Lovely! Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful !

Please share with us more, as you learn about this pen.

May we assume that it is an eyedropper filler ?

Is the clip original or aftermarket ?

What about it makes it a "safety" pen ?

Congratulations on a wonderful possession.

It is the original clip

The fact that you have to turn the bottom of the body for the nib to get out

and also

Thank you all for the comments.

@ Betweenthelens - no, I didn't carve that. It is just a decorative africain artefact.

Thank you for appreciating it.

The problem with some french brands, such as Swell, Bayard, and others, is that there is not much information.

I've been lucky enough to acquire one of these beautiful safety pens from a local antiquefair.

Unfortunately mine doesn't have the lovely ornate pocket clip so if anyone has one languishing in a spares box somewhere - please get in touch!

Regards to all

Paul.

Hi,

Did you ever find more info on Swell?

I've just finished restoring this Swell deLuxe botton filler, with 18ct warranted nib. It writes beautifully

Attached some photos for anybody's interest..

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
