Hi! I've lurked for a little bit and finally decided to take the plunge.

My fountain pen obsession began at school when we had to learn to write using a fountain pen. I'm guessing this isn't done anymore, but at the time we learnt how to print with a pencil and then joined up writing with a fountain pen. At the time I used a an oversize, marbled something or other that had a sac with a metal frame around it. You squeezed the metal frame to suck up the ink. I loved it, but sadly it is lost in the mists of time.

Since then I have always owned a fountain pen of one type or another - some of them have stayed with me and some have been lost or broken. For the past couple of years I have picked up a few pens online and at various auctions/sales etc. Half the time I haven't a clue what I'm buying; it's just what I like the look and feel of. A lot of what I have I don't know what it is, but that may change here!

Currently I have 14 fountain pens in my collection - small, but I only buy what I'm really drawn to. They are:

A Parker Prelude (which I think I bought in the mid 90's)

A very cheap plastic Parker (no idea of model) that I've had since the early 80's and never really worked very well.

An Eversharp (Oxford?) lever filler, made in England with a flex nib

A teeny weeny Peter Pan

A Conway Stewart from the 50's, lever filler

A slightly odd looking Scout lever filler

A Parker black and pearl button filler

A Netunno Shark

A Marxton Eclipse

An E.Faber lever filler

A Wearever lever filler with a horrible nib

Two ebay specials with wood fittings, but they write!

An unknown lever filler with a kind of camo marble effect.

And that's it!

Welcome !

A clueless FP collector.....ahh, that should change now your with the FPN. Nothing wrong going with the look and feel of what you like. Has a nice mysterious aspect to it. Over time though you'll begin to see, identify and appreciate the varied types/brands......no rush.

thanks & best wishes, Captain Nib

...keep nibbing on...

Don't look down on someone, unless helping them up :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
