Are we to understand that August 22-24 are the three days many have been waiting to hear about since 2012?

Maybe I'm the one who's befuddled. I suspected, in my romantic way, that the August dates just might refer to a San Francisco pen show.

I am seeing as through a browser window, darkly. But I did have a sense that at least three or four people went away from the last San Francisco show looking forward to another one. And being disappointed at not hearing the dates for 2013.

I think you might be on to something.

Strictly speaking, we are still in the realm of nods, winks, hints, and intimations in general. No concrete announcement. Let me therefore seize this still-plastic moment to put forward my other conjecture: In honor of Lisa, a three-day Society for Creative Anachronism tournament in which the competitors would smite one another with staves painted in the form of Nakaya fountain pens. I may have guessed wrong, though.

Hi all,

My wife and I are heading to the LA pen show for the first time this year and what better way to prepare than to come to the pre- and maybe post-show Pen Posse meetings!

Please let us know if there's been any change to the planned meet up times.. Do people usually bring pens or other goodies to look at? We're trying to decide what to bring to the Posse, let alone the show!

Times are as initially planned. Bring it all then leave most at home.

What is it that the Smitties are looking for? We may have it here.

Haha,, I think what we're looking for most is a good ol' fashioned pen show! It's been too long since our last.. SF two years ago I think.. And August seems awfully far away!

I have a few specific items in mind.. Some rare mechanical pencils, some Snorkel and Vac browsing..

I think She might be after any Safaris missing from the herd... and maybe a 51.. and there was some mention of maki-e :o

Sounds great, we'll see you there! I don't think we have any particular 51 in mind, although we'd probably tend towards the earlier Aeros.

Any hope of minor pen surgery? Equivalent of periodontal treatment? In a sudden access of eBay insanity, I bought a Cross Century nib unit. One extra might come in handy, since one that I possess is sort of imperfect.

Nib arrives with nick in one tine, rough behavior in L to R strokes. That has been fixed. Am told the inside surfaces of the tines would benefit from smoothing. Is this an intervention that might take place in the middle of LA show frenzy, giant apple pie consumption, sadly watching Loren defer his gratification w/r/t that MB barrel?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
