Hello From Maryland

I have just recently became interested in fountain pens after using ball points all of my life. Stopped by this great site and had to join. I only have just started and am a complete beginner. Two pens so far and some ink cartridges to sample.

Thanks for the great welcomes. In response to "Aggie" I have 2 Levenger True Writers and some cartridges. I am still not gotten the skill for using FPs in a consistent manner. Need practice I am sure. There are so much information out there on Fountain Pens it is almost too much.

Which two pens did you get for starters ? Remember that fountain pens are used with a

fingers-extended, relaxed grip. The ink is attracted to the paper, and will flow with slightest

contact. Contrast a ballpoint pen, that has be be gripped firmly, in order to bear down on

the paper, so the ball will track.

 

Cartridge fountain pens are durable and easy to maintain. The cartridges are refillable, using

a syringe. Bottle ink is very economical.

I once read that to use a fountain pen one must be the ice skater gracefully gliding upon the page. Whilst, using a ballpen, was to drive an army tank across the page.

 

Sasha Royale thus gives good advice there - let the ink do the work, with a relaxed, light grip.

 

Or (as I've also read), if the fountain pen be the tongue of the hand....then speak softly...and never, ever bite your tongue !!

Again thanks for all of the extra links to the two shops in MD. They seem like great businesses with much experience. The above advice is what I am needing as my grip seems too tight and stiff sometimes. Currenly I have the Silver Seas and Cafe Au Late pens from Levenger, and a set of disposable FP's. The disposable ones seem better than the Silver Seas so far. I have a fine nib for the Cafe Late pen which I have not tried yet. Thanks for all the welcome advice. I am in Harford County, MD.
