How Do You Store Your Inks?

Recommended Posts

In the past i used a small desk organizer from a local office supply store. With my pen, ink and paper collection on the rise, i have dedicated my desk organizer to pens and a few small pads of paper. Now what do i do with my ink? I currently own 11 bottles, and i dont expect that number so dwindle anytime soon. I might order another bottle or two of noodler's soon.

My GF suggested we find a cool antique box of sorts at a local antique mall.

so people of FPN, please show me how you organize your inks. I would prefer something i can put them in rather than on.

For a brief period of time, I had my inks displayed nicely on a bookshelf. However, I discovered that the inks had a habit of slowly "walking" toward the edge, the inks in the back were hard to get to, and I decided that I didn't like them all exposed to the light. Now, they sit in a shoebox.

I think your girlfriend's idea of a nice box is a good one. It will look classier than my shoebox and put all the bottles within easy access.

I don't really have a storage system as such. I used to have the 6 bottles I own lined up on my desk however I read here that UV light can damage them so I have placed them all in the top draw of my desk which seems ok.

It would be good to have something a bit more permanent so it would be interesting to see what others use.

Mine are all in colorful, patterned photo boxes from the craft store. I have lots and lots and lots of ink, so I have numbered each box and created a spreadsheet to tell me which box a particular ink is in.

Mine are all in two Ikea Billy bookshelves, away from direct sunlight. I won't continue in any other fashion...

Is it only direct sunlight that will harm the ink? I have my bottles on a shelf, but they are out of the suns reach.

I prefer to have them on display. I bought these baskets at the local meijer store and pith them on the wall. I made sure to hang them on the same wall as the window so that they will never be in direct sunlight.

They are too nice yo hide.

Although, now i have 5 baskets and well over 30 i.ks so i, too, will need to find another way because im running out of wall space.

It's UV light that is the issue so really anywhere in a naturally daylight room will have UV light about. I did not know this so am trying to make room for my ink bottles as well in a drawer or box.

Nice, anyway I think indirect sun light can change the chemistry in the inks, the original boxes can help.

Thanks for clearing that up. My physics book learning is not work good. Back in the drawer they go then. It's a shame, cause many ink bottles are quite pretty.

I have a sizable wooden box that a pie came in. It is tall enough for most inks I believe, and has a sliding lid.

Remember this day... somewhere down the line the time you just had only 2 bottles of ink will seem like a long time ago!

The majority of my inks are in a desk draw, those that are still boxed are sets by brand in a range of places, Iroshis and Edelsteins are on my desk on top of a pen case. I have a few bottles out un-boxed if they are in in use in pens.

There have been a number of posts about UV and ink in bottles, I was under the impression that a glass bottle would significantly reduce the effects of UV on bottled ink.

I did save the boxes. Most if my inks are noodlers. I tgunk ill chance it.

Ive been told by many veterans that as ling as not in direct sunlight it should be ok.

I dont fill from them either. I use vials. From bottle to vial. From vial to pen. Thus cutting down on chance of bacteria.

Its been about a year for some of the inks and there is no change yet from my original samples i took upon buying them.

Ive also been told that in the dark mold can grow.

Hello. Good idea for a handsome box for storing your inks. I have 2 of them, one found at a local consignment shop in the shape of a coffin, made of two complimenting woods and the other made of a light to medium red leather with fake croc. finish at a thrift store. They look really cool, and the red leather one when opened has a hinged, smaller top tray that I keep some of my finer pens & an accessory or two in...You'll know it when you run across the right one...Good luck, LeRoy

That's a great idea. I've been looking for an inexpensive bookcase for my inks. I don't know why I didn't think of Ikea.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
