I have admired Stan and Ricky's pics of their Pilot Custom series pens for a long time now, and a while ago I was lucky enough to get the sterling ciselle (?) Custom at a good price. Recently I saw a Custom sterling Heart Sutra and immediately put in a bid for it, and was lucky enough to grab it! I'll be traveling starting tomorrow, so I won't be able to put up more pics until the new year, but rest assured that I will :)

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

Congrats! Hard to beat the Heart Sutra -- if it was on my pen, I'd end out chanting it all the time. :D I played a couple different versions to my Chinese women's history class last semester during the week we were reading about feminine Buddhist piety.

 

Are the characters only on the cap and barrel or are they underneath the cap, on the section, too?

Shudaizi, there are no characters on the section - I don't think any if the sutra pens have that, but I could be wrong.

that one on the right is a very nice lookin pen. i assume it's a vintage?

Read closer mate, emphasis mine. It's a Pilot Custom Sterling Ciselé (Parker reference) or Crosshatch, or just sterling because the other sterlings have special motif therefore description. Mine was from '75, not sure that's 'vintage' or not. I am quite fond of it.

 

Btw Rudy, the sterling is nice but speaking of which... in your country there was a publisher called Prajna Paramita famous for publishing Karl May series of all things: Winnetou, Old Shatterhand, etc. Remember them? Well, Prajnaparamita Hrdaya is the real name of the Heart Sutra; a tribute to the original culture/religion of the region no doubt. Cheers.

Rudy, Tony has the right of it: mine is from 1977 (the Heart Sutra is from 1975). Vintage vs. Modern is hard to say; I call them near modern to split the difference :)

Very nice find Josh! As a bonus, I'm told that Pilot's inscription of the sutra is the most historically correct text compared to those from other makers. Someone else may be able to verify or refute this.

 

Either way, you found yourself some very lovely pens!

Thanks Karlo! I hope to find some more of them - I think there are 4 or 5 variants of the Sutra pens? Of course, there are lots of other Customs as well, in some very nice finishes...collection focus, achieved!

 

Rudy, a lot of these pens are about the same age as me, so that is another reason they make a great collection focus for me :)

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning.
