A 6-Pen Tray From My Wife...

Greetings good people! I wanted to take a few moments to show off a little something from my wife. For the past few months she has been attending weekly pottery sessions at the local art gallery (read: she drinks wine and talks about girl things while making things from clay). Usually she comes home at the end of the sessions with little trinkets for the garden or handmade pots for her succulents, but last night she came home with something special...

She made me a six-pen tray from clay and glazed it with a really gorgeous mixture of blues and browns. I am her biggest fan and I love the hand-built nature of her pottery pieces. Most people use the wheel and make vase after vase after vase. But she always amazes me with these perfectly imperfect pieces. And this one is the best of the bunch. I was so pleased with it that I just had to show it off to you guys. Here are a couple more views of it:

Anyway... Just thought I'd take a moment to show of my new pen display. It's not carved from exotic wood or lined with the finest suede, but darn if it doesn't look handsome on my desk with a row of pens in it.

Hope you all have a beautiful holiday season filled with all of the love, joy and happiness your hearts can bear.

All the best,

Matthew

Beautiful Matthew. I took a pottery class a few years ago and I made some really awful things and made a couple of nice looking things. This pen rest is beautiful. Congrats on finding such a wonderful partner and have a very happy holiday season and happy new year.

Now that is truly a gift of love. And it really is perfect! Grainweevil nailed it, too, as the pen rest/display looks like a wonderful heirloom you've had for years. And, I'm sure you will have it for years!

Very nice and thoughtful gift. And I also like the color combination of the blue and brown glazes.

Hmmm. My husband used to do ceramics when we lived in Massachusetts.... We had a pottery studio set up in our basement, and he held weekly get-togethers with other people -- most of whom were the actual owners of the equipment -- two wheels, three different size kilns, a pug mill and a slip mixer. When we put up that house for sale, the real estate agent said "All that stuff HAS to go!" Making the equipment owners really unhappy, since most of them lived in small apartments in Boston and didn't have room for it -- hence our large, suburban basement.

Now if I just had a desk to put it on....

Don't suppose your wife has a sister...? : )

Sorry. Out of luck on that one. But she did say she would be glad to make you a pen tray. :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
