What Do I Have?

Hi!

I have just acquired a smallish (compared to my 149) fountain pen, and hoped someone could help me identify the model#, Mfg date, etc.

I would like to sell it, but have no idea of it's value.

Thank you in advance!

Mike

Could you send us a photo of the nib? and of the cup, looked from the top. It will help a lot. It looks like a MB 144

I think your 144 is from the 1980s. The later versions had two-tone nibs and the scrolls around the imprint.

I think a value might be around $100 to $150 depending on condition. MB discontinued the 144 about 10 years ago and replaced it with the 145, but the two are almost identical. You could try checking the completed listing on eBay to give you a better idea or try asking in the MB sub-forum.

Yes, I agree, it looks like an old 144 (I have a 146 from 1982, and the nib is single colored, instead of the beauty silver/gold of the newer models). No idea about price. I will depend on many variables. Is it still writing, what kind of nib does it have, the state of the body. But, as many Montblancs, it will be a smooth FP, and if you do not find too slim, you will enjoy it. If you want to keep it for yourself. If you are planning just to sell it and make some money with it, Florida Blue already gave you a hint.

In my opinion, FP are to be stored, but it something that I have to discuss with my psychologist.

Cool!

Thank you all for your help!

I may keep it after all.

It does write, though it is a fine point (I prefer a broader nib)> It is an elegant pen.

Me too, broad nibs are my favorites, but older nibs use to be fine or medium. Any way, you may try to find a new nib for it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
