Justus 95 Rekindling My Pilot Fancies

KarloT

Recommended Posts

I picked up a Justus 95 last week. I was not expecting to like it as much as I do but it is one of the few Pilot offerings that I get along with.

The section is long enough to be comfortable in my hand and I like that the transition from barrel to section is subtle. Weight and balance are good, even when posted.

I find that Pilot's Fines tend to flow dry from the box, and exude a toothy feel on a counterclockwise stroke. This one was wet and smooth, whether it was set to H or S.

A full flex pen this is not, but I like their expression of a soft nib.

If you've been thinking of the Justus, I'd say it's worth a test drive. I also wouldn't be surprised if one ended up following you home. :)

I am considering one of these, how much did you get yours for ?

Is it comparable to a vintage semi-flex ?

Dentist... Guitar player (not playing these days).... And a fountain pen user like all of you!

I got mine for a little under $300 at one of my favorite Asian B&Ms.

Set at S, it's about as springy as the vintage Aurora 88 in my box.

Congratulations, Karlo! I love mine.

Did you get the lined or the barleycorn finish?

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

That's wonderful, Karlo! A friend lent me his Justus for a little while. I fell madly in love with the nib, but alas the pen does not sit well in my hand. *sigh* Can't have it all, apparently.

So glad you are enjoying one for me!

Cheers,

Julie

I love the way mine writes and how big a pen it is in relation to other Pilots I've used.

I got the barleycorn. The lined was too subtle a finish for my taste. Something like Nakaya's hairline but glossy instead of matte.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just got mine yesterday, also in the barleycorn finish. I really like it a lot!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
