Ottoman Azure is one of my most recent purchases. A nice blue that changes with the pen used. I thought it a darker blue when first saw it used in a letter from an FPN penpal. She prefers very fine and somewhat flexible nibs.

 

Don't remember what the first pen I inked with Azure was, but I have it now in a Rotring Surf with a medium nib and puts down a lighter, more subtle blue line, with a hint of shading.

 

An overall winner.

Great review as usual, Amber. Thank you! It always remains interesting to me that this Ottoman is very similar (if not identical) to Noodler's "Blue". In any case, both seemed to have done a good job in preparing a decent substitute for Parker's Penman Sapphire. Thanks, DC!

I remembered using it before and liking it, but after using Blue Steel, this felt too dry and scratchy. I didn't even finish the first fill even though the color is beautiful.

This is actually a very nice ink. I've used it for school, and it has a little bleed through and show through on my cheap paper, while using XF safari.

Love this color. A little surprised at your dryness comment. I have never had a dryness issue with it and can even use it with fairly thin nibs that could never use a dry ink.

Hmm..... Do you think my sample had dried out? Or do you think it may be a problem with living in the very arid desert? (I will freely admit that problem may just be me).

It always remains interesting to me that this Ottoman is very similar (if not identical) to Noodler's "Blue".

 

Anything is possible, batch to batch, but FWIW, my sample of Ottoman Azure was shifted towards the green slightly from Noodler's Blue and was slightly lighter. Diamine Asa blue is also shifted that way from my Noodler's Blue, but I had the Asa and Ottoman Azure samples at different times, so I have not been able to compare those directly.

Hmmm... I notice is is similar to Eel blue. (I never bought the just "blue" because if I'm going to use a non-water resistant bright blue, I figured it should have lubricating properties). (Keep your mind out of the gutter, Lapis!).

In my experience, the wetter the pen, the more blue this color gets. In a drier pen it shows the shading better.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
