I call these "configurable notebooks."

When I used this phrase with a coworker he got it immediately.

oooh, great! I think I'll use that too :-) Thanks for letting me know about the coworker knowing what you meant - that helps! Unless of course you guys are in the stationery/office supplies business :P

The problem pages with multiple holes for ring binders, or indentations for disk binders, is that it multiply the possible failure of one of more of them.

This make the page(s) unusable or forces one to run for the reinforcing circles or strips.

While this is probably not a problem if the pages are seldom moved like in a ink, daily, quote or poem journal...

It might turn out to become one, for school or other writing projects, which require moving pages in and out of binders quite often.

I used many multi rings binders in many sizes and this problem has led me to favor U.S 3 rings binders in letter and half letter size.

For smaller capacity and portability, I use 3 hole punched pocket folders which hold roughly the same number of page as the product described in the thread and can also hold page protectors.

I hold the pages with brads and washers, which can be found in brass in office stores, and in various colors, in the scrapbooking department.

I completely understand the fascination with office supply things. I did click the link and looked at the product numerous pictures after all. :)

But if you use brads, doesn't that crease the pages along the length when you turn them? Unless that's not a problem for you?

I'm not affiliated with ANY of the brands/retailers/shops/ebay sellers/whatever I mention or recommend. If that ever changes, I will let you know :)

Looking for a cheap Pilot VP/Capless - willing to put up with lots of cosmetic damage.

  • 3 weeks later...

I just discovered this notebook that does not have rings but allows for easily adding and removing paper. It's a new take on an old system, which, I think, is called a springback. This new version is by Sorta books and are 8.5 by 6.25 inches. So, I could fold or cut my own paper to fit. I've ordered one but the company is just one guy, so he’s a bit behind in filling orders since the book got mentioned on Lifehacker!

I found it last week on Lifehacker One of the comments to the Lifehacker article linked to springback binders available from Leuchtturm. But they are for roughly 8.5×11 inch paper. That’s too large for what I want.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
